AP maximum FP+s ??

We are current AP holders with expiration in January, 2015. We have FP+s booked for an upcoming on-site stay that were made 60 days ahead of check-in. We want to look at FP+ availability within the next 30 days for possible off-site stay, but the system is telling me that it "will remove [me] from the party" because my maximum number of FP+s have been used. We have never used FP+ without an on-site stay before. I thought AP holders were supposed to be able to book 7 days of FP+s within 30 days. What am I not understanding?

If you are staying at a Disney Resort hotel, you can make your FastPass+ selections up to 60 days prior to check-in. Plus, you may hold FastPass+ selections for up to 7 days or the length of your hotel stay—whichever is greater!

Let me try asking with this question: As an AP holder, can I have FP+s for an on-site stay and and off-site stay both?
It seems to me I should be able to do both, but have to be within 30 days for the off-site stay whereas I was able to book the FP+s for the on-site stay earlier. If I can't do both, then Disney is saying that once you have FP+s for an on-site stay I may not have any FP+s for a visit earlier than my on-site stay. GRRRRR.

FP+ is connected to your ticket. All the resort stay does is let you book sooner or length of stay if over the normal maximum. AP holders are allowed 7 days worth of FP+s at a time, unless their resort stay is longer than 7 days. If you have more than 7 days of reservations, you'll either have to loose a day/s or not use FP+. Your off-site stay does not entitle you to more FP+s. If Disney didn't do this, AP holders could just go in and make FP+ reservations for every day regardless if they plan to go to the parks or not.

I understand the 7 day limit so we don't have FP+s for every day, but hoped it would be in addition to on-site stays. Apparently I can't extend a vacation by staying off-site. That decreases the value I think I'm getting from an AP... Thanks for the explanation, though.
