This is the first year I've gotten an AP. Does anyone know if there might be AP room discounts during September? I know free dining ids probably coming for September and I'm wondering if it is better to hold out for an AP room discount instead. Any thoughts?

There should be AP discounts. Here is a historical record of discounts over on MouseSavers: http://www.mousesavers.com/historicalwdwdiscounts.html .

There were AP discounts last year during free dining. I think they were around $25 Value, $45 Moderate, $70 Deluxe. As there are 3 of you (2 Adults and 1 child) the value of the DDP is $89. You'll have to do the math to see if it's worth it to you.

Be aware that AP rates are for room-only and if you want the DDP you must book a package or rent DVC points.

Our son will still be two at the time, so he won't be on the DDP. That makes the value of the DDP $78/day, right? I'm so conflicted about this trip and which discounts to use!

We are also passholders, in order to get free dining to you just have to rent rooms at rack rates or buy tickets as well?
Yes. You must book a package with at least a one-day one-park base pass. They cost about $72 each. The good news is that you can save that pass upgrade it at a later time to whatever kind of pass you need, including an AP renewal if you are there in your renewal window. We did free dining in 8/2005 and 8/2006. In 12/2005 we upgraded our one-days to DVC AP Renewals. In 12/2006 we upgraded them to 10-Day Park Hoppers as we are going to Asia this summer and not FL.

Personally, I would book the Free Dining when it comes out. There will be a flurry of activity and you will want to make sure you have your room books ASAP. If/when AP rates come out you can compare rates and do the math. The discounts may be better that they were last year. You have up to 45 days before your check-in date to cancel without penalty which is mid to late July depending on your check-in date. I expect the AP rates will come out before your 45-day deadline.

We really liked the DDP. I have had it for free twice and we paid for it once. It really gives us the freedom to eat where ever we want without worrying about the cost.

We have also done it twice and enjoyed it both times. (once free, once paid for) Do my DH and I have to get the same tickets for the length of our stay? I'd like to get him a one-day only since he has an AP, but I'll need a ticket for the length of our stay.

If it's like last year, everyone has to be on the same plan/tickets - per allearsnet for 2006:

Everyone in the room must be on the same package and ticket options. All tickets must be used within 14 days of first use, unless the No Expiration Option is purchased.

Yes, you have to get the same tickets, but you may upgrade your one-day one-park base ticket to a length of stay ticket while your DH's ticket remains unused. You can upgrade at check-in or at Customer Relations outside the park gates.

We are looking at going during free dining. We have APs and have used them twice.... like we had planned. But by my math we can go for 8 nights on property, with tickets for 8 days for $711!!! And we will get 32 snack 32 CS and 32 TS meals! It will cost us extra (the cost of the 4 one day tickets, but I don't consider that money spent on this trip, but rather invested for future trips.... make sense?) That's unreal!

Which brings me to my question.... can you go to guest services and remove the ticket portion of your room key and have it put on paper tickets to save for future upgrade? Is that the correct way to handle that? Or do you keep the room keys, that doesnt seem/feel right????

Nope. You just keep your room keys. In fact, when we upgraded our one-day one-parks passes from 8/06 to 10-day park hoppers in 12/06 we kept the old key cards as our passes.
