If there are no AP rates available for the entire stay (because the AP rooms are all booked), you would ask for two separate reservations (requiring two separate deposits). One reservation for the AP nights, and one for the non-AP nights. Then you keep calling back and add to the AP nights as they become available.
But to me, the way k&a&c'smom made it sound, if you were able to get an AP rate for the first night, it would simply carry through the entire reservation, whether or not all nights had an AP rate available.
