We are looking to change internet providers. What is your opinion of AOL? The price? The service? I need the good, bad, and the ugly. Thanks! :sunny:

i hated aol...we had it for years and finally got rid of it last year...i have comcast cable now and love it!
I had a problem with the customer service at aol...i didnt know about the price, as my parents paid for it, but every time i called customer service, i had a hard time understanding them, they had a hard time understanding me...was not fun!

Stay far far away from AOL. It SUCKS! Horrible, awful, evil customer service!! Once you sign up, good luck trying to cancel!!

The software is annoying and slow; most of it is garbage that you don't really need and could find for free on the internet. And every time I closed it, it would "update" and seemed to take forever to do the stupid updates!!

I've had AOL for years, and have never, ever had a problem. I love it. I've dealt with customer service a few times, and they were friendly and easy to deal with.

I will never ever ever ever and ever use aol. I am not going there. I put waaay too much work into my pcs to do THAT to them. I swear up and down that AOL is pc suicide. Trust me. If they are giving it away for months at a time, it must not be worth paying for.

Unless you like getting disconnected often, I would go somewhere else. Also, their customer service is not the best in my experience. Plus, unless they have changed it, they do not offer high speed cable, so in addition to your cable provider's fees, you have to pay an AOL fee - I think it was around $15 when I looked into it.

We switched to high speed cable, and love it.

We have it and it isnt that nice. The one NICE thing about it is we dont get alot of spam. But we always have to reistall it. MSN and Yahoo get alot of spam.

AOL's specialty is its marketing -- it does a great job at selling its service. If you get a lot out of having a service sold to you, then AOL may be for you. Most folks find that they get more of out of an online service from its features, performance, and from the customer service it provides, and AOL isn't the best with regard to any of those characteristics, for the price they charge (probably because they have to direct a lot of their revenue towards paying for their promotions).

Don't go with AOL it will be the biggest mistake you could make!! We had them for years and was plagued with numerous viruses, junk mail, etc. Finally my boys talked some sense into me and we dumped AOL for SBC DSL. I haven't had a computer crash or problems with viruses since!! My only regret is that I didn't get rid of AOL sooner. They even hassled me when I cancelled. It took 3 phone calls and a fax to them to finally get them to cancel our acct. and stop charging my credit card.

They don't call it AOHell for no reason. You're better off looking elsewhere.

I had aol for yrs without much problems but their customer service is somewhere in India or someplace so they're really hard to understand. Asking for a supervisor was another problem because they're trained to not get a supervisor, you end up argueing with the person. I switched because I got a new computer that runs XP. For whatever reason, aol and my new computer don't like each other. Aol says it's a microsoft problem, microsoft says it's aol's software. Whatever, all I know is I got incompatability messages until the computer totally crashed. Took it to an expert who told me to get rid of aol. Great, we can't get any other dial-up with a free phone #, dsl isn't available. That leaves me with comcast. I love the speed, haven't had any problems, but I really hate paying them $40+ every month.

customer service is somewhere in India
I just ran into this with Amazon.com, for the first time. It isn't so much the accents... I can handle that. I probably sound funny to them. The real problem is the crappy communications.

I have been with AOL since 1995 and have yet to have any kind of problems with them...I haven't had a disconnect in MANY years now and customer service was always good when I needed to talk to them. I actually have a cable modem now but I keep AOL for 9.95 a monht becuase they have some features that Ilike that I can't access from anyplace else...I've never had a computer virus and get maybe one or 2 pieces of spam a day...if that many....I won't ever give up my AOL!

Don't do it, once they have you it's almost impossible to get away.

AOL is a mess they messed up our billing all the time
and over charged us
we cancelled this year and got gmail for our mail way better

I've had an AOL account since 1993. I basically still have it just so that everyone knows where to find me. I don't use the service to dial into the net anymore. I have the bring your own ISP which is much cheaper than the regular plan.

There are features that I like about AOL, such as XM Radio. Many of the features I used to love have gone away, so I may consider dropping it. But again, I am paying for the convenience of having the same email address for 12 years.

Before I had DSL, I did try out a few dial up services. They all had problems.
