Is there anything interesting within walking distance of the stop in Victoria Canada or Ensenada Mexico? In Mexico I would be happy to lounge on the beach I think. Are taxis very expensive at either place?

From my research online and also from reading posts here, there's not a beach anywhere remotely close to Ensenada. The closest thing would be the resort excursion, but even then, you can't swim in the ocean. They've got a pool you can swim at, but there's not even a swimming beach at that resort (from what I've read).

As for Victoria, yes. I believe there's quite a lot to see/do right around the port area.

I just got off the repo and there were free shuttle buses right at the port that would take you into Victoria and drop you at the Empress Hotel. From there you can take a walking tour of the city and depending on how much walking you can tolerate you can go to Chinatown. The shuttle buses back to the ship ran about every 15-20 minutes.

There was other transportation at the port that did city tours but I do not know what they were charging.

Ensenada is not a beach town! Its actually more of a 'dirty bar town'. I wouldn't get off the ship. Been there, spent 10 mins in town, went back to the ship.

EnSenada's two claims to fame are duty free shopping and having Mexico's second largest flag. Scratch that off your bucket list.

You can walk from the port to downtown Victoria or just take the shuttle - I recall there is a charge. There is plenty to do there. I recommend the BC museum which is right across the street from the Empress.

I was just there on Monday (LA-VAN repo cruise) and there was no charge for the shuttles to/from the port/town.

It is a beautiful walk from the port to the Empress Hotel right along the water front. Victoria is such a beautiful, clean city. Would love to go back there one day and spend more time.

Ensenada is not a pretty city, very dirty, like most of Mexico's cities. Nothing to see there but bars. Don't care to go back there at all.

I was also on the repo and took the free shuttle to the Empress. From there you could:
Walk into the Empress and look around or have tea.
Walk 1/2 mile north to Chinatown.
Walk 1/2 block east to Miniature World.
Walk 1/4 mile south then west to both the Parliment Building and the Undersea Gardens attraction.
Walk 1/4 mile south then east to the Royal British Columbia Museum.

Other big attractions, such as Butchart Gardens or Craigdarroch Castle, are way beyond walking distance.

Regarding Ensenada, having been there before organized crime became the concern it is today, I would just stay on the ship.

wow, thanks for all the replies. I've said this before, but you all are really the best. i love being able to 'talk' to real people. (who are also a tiny bit in love with the mouse)

Yes! I'd like to hear more about this "Miniature World!" :)

Eeew, looks like the bug zoo is nearby too... you can buy bugs even. great.

LOL...I've heard kids just love it. I told my kids I'd take them there when you-know-where freezes over :rotfl2:. Fortunately I have girly-girls who have no interest in bugs.

also, royal bc museum. anyone been there?

Yep, many times...love it. Great for local history and quite a few hands on type activities for the kids nowadays. The Nat'l Geographic Imax theatre is also there if you wanted to catch a film.

Museum

There's also the ubiquitous Starbuck's everywhere but for local flavour I prefer Murchies for coffee/tea, just up Government Street from Rogers. And stop in and check out Munro's bookstore - my favouritist place in the whole world :lovestruc - and will appear in the recent movie filmed about JK Rowling (tv movie? Can't remember...)
