I heard there were 2 more storms behind, but can't find any info. Any stations or sources ready to talk about "after Dennis" yet?

We go next week :umbrella:

As of now there are no named storms. Storms are named once they become Tropical Storms 40MPH Winds. They are showing a tropical wave 1200 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. But thats very far off.

Alot of storms that start out there end up coming west then heading north. If I was you I wouldn't worry. Enjoy your vacation

There's a wave that came off of Africa a few days ago that is showing signs of getting organized. Of course, it's *way* too early to know if it will form into a tropical storm or a hurricane....and if it did, there's no telling where it will go just yet. My advice to anyone traveling to WDW...don't worry about hurricanes. Charley is about as bad as it could ever get at WDW, and at most you'll spend one day in your hotel room. WDW always has power, and never runs out of food. People on the coast evacuate *to* Disney....

That was very reassuring, thank you. I was freaking out a little when I saw this thread! We leave in three days!

Having spent the night with Charley at the Contemporary, I can say that as long as you can get to WDW, you'll be fine!! We arrived on the same day...actually one of the last flights in from Boston. About 7 hrs. later Charley checked in. It was incredibly safe...I was really surprised. As long as you can get into the airport, and then back out again, it's terrific!!

Y'all have put my mind at ease as well. We aren't going until the first day of October, but I know things can still be moving around at that time.

I'm glad I switched from Ft. Wilderness to AS Sports, though - I think that will be safer, should something hit.

You're quite welcome. I live in Orlando and got through all three last year just fine. Charley was by far the worst, but Disney did a fabulous job with their guests. In fact, as AP holders, my DH and I went over there to eat! All of the buildings held up just fine. Everything is Disney is at or above code, all the buildings have lightning rods...a really safe place.

We lost power for 7 days and after day one of no AC, we got a great Florida resident rate over at the Portofino Bay Hotel and stayed there until our power came back on. We went there because they take pets....and they were *wonderful* over there too.

I just can't imagine our area seeing anything worse than Charley...100mph winds that far inland.

And while I know that hurricanes are awful, I do think that the media hype brings the panic up to unnecessary levels. I had two strangers ask me on Saturday if I was ready for the hurricane. Um, no....we're not even *getting* the hurricane here. I mean, we're overcast, breezy and did get some squalls through here, but our regular thunderstorms can be much worse.

Enjoy your vacation!

What a very helpful thing to have said! Wishing you the same kind of sunshine you're bringing to those of us a bit anxious about heading to WDW during hurricane season!

I'm the OP; we're going for 3 1/2 weeks--one week of it at Bradenton, the rest in Orlando. My DH is extremely hurricane spooked. I keep assuring him there are lots of people actually living in Florida--they lived there before last summer, they live there now, and just like them, if we are there when the "big one" hits, we will take precautions and COPE.

Both he and I grew up in Southern California, right on top of the San Andreas fault, so I'm thinkin' his subliminal earthquake anxiety has transferred to hurricanes.

thanks for the reasurring words. I will repeat them like a mantra to him.

You're from Punxsutawney, and you're asking US about the future weather?

You've got you're very own famous weather prestitigitator (am I even close with that spelling?) right in your own home town!

What does Phil say?

I can relate to that, I think I suffer the same thing. Although I never really cared about earthquakes when I lived there :teeth: But, the hurricanes and tornados really freak me out :umbrella:

My theory is that you get used to whatever threat you grew up with, but if you move away the new weather can be scary. I grew up in NJ, and when I moved to Indiana I was terrified of the summer storms and tornado threats. We have always wanted a house with a basement here! Our part of Indiana rarely gets tornado action, but I head for the basement whenever the weather gets weird.

Hurricanes give days of notice. It your hubby was that freaked out you could drive back to PA! Now earthquakes -- THOSE are scary! Tell him he is more likely to be hurt in a crash on icy roads in central PA in January!

I am mostly worried about our drive there and back. We are in Texas and will be driving along the coast where the storms just hit. My dh is as calm as can be, but I am not happy. :sad2:

Thanks for all the info on this thread. I feel better now, we are not going till the end of the season but I was still slightly worried. I should have known better. I used to live in Southern California and if there ever was a big earthquake that is where I would want to be. I used to tell everyone that if there was a small quake head straight for Disneyland. Because a) the place would be empty and b)if the small quake was a prequake and a big one hit every 10th person would be a safety engineer (they flood the park with safety inspectors after a quake). So I guess the same holds true for a huricane. Good to know.

TD5 Has formed off the coast of Africa and should be a hurricane by tuesday. If it stays on its current path it will be a direct hit to central florida.

do you think i'll have to worry about storms when im on my vacation ? aug22 - sept 02....hopefully not, i won't come that often to the US :(

HI
Thanks for the info!

Our trip is in 3 weeks and we're praying that those things don't make it to any storm.
not only for us and our trip, but for everybody down there, cuba, dominican republic puerto rico and FL.

I just looked at the information on Tropical Depression five from the National Hurricane Center site. If it moves as they predict, it will arrive in Florida at the same time as we do next weekend :scared1: :umbrella:

We have been going to Florida every year since 1996 but never in late July/early august. We did talk about the fact that it was hurricane season, but though that since it would still be early it would probably be ok. I'm not so worried about the 14 days we will be spending at WDW, but more so about the 7 days in Key West !

I just saw our Key West hotel on CNN last night, It looked like an island totally surrounded by water. It was so strange to see the destruction at a hotel where we have been several times and even more worrying that we're staying there in less than 3 weeks :earseek:

Hoping for lots of :sunny: and not too much :umbrella:

Thea
Leaving in 4 days......
