anything better than itunes for ipod

Also, check Amazon's MP3 Deal of the Day. Each day there is an entire album you can download for a hefty discount (most are $1.99 - $3.99) It's really great when there is an artist you like...you can get the whole album for the cost of just a few songs on I-Tunes.

We have downloaded quite a few albums this way. In fact, often they are pretty new releases, and they are artists most of us have actually heard of! I have even gotten a few Disney CD's this way.

They also have albums each month that are discounted to $5. These change on the first of each month. Again, they are pretty well-known albums/artists.

I'm not the most technno-savvy person in the world, so I can't give you all the details - that's my husband's department. I was focusing on the fnancial aspect, the fact that my children could be so dumb - they don't want to pay 99 cents for a download, but you'd get "free music" that would end up costing you an iPod!

As I understand it, somehow, the virus infected music files caused the iPods to malfunction - They'd be reset a few times, work for a day and conk out again. Eventually, they just died - wouldn't even power on. One of them was "revived" after it was sent off for repairs - it took us so long to get it back, that we bought a replacement in the meantime. We had no luck with the other two though.

DD17 learned her lesson and only buys legitimate downloads! The other two still haven't caught on - the next new iPods they'll be getting will be the ones they buy with their own money!

I am still not tracking the hardware side of it. There have been documented cases of Windows virii being carried by an iPod to infect a host computer (actually happened in the iPod factory for a 2 week period several years ago). But I have never heard of a destructive virus that targeted the iPod platform. Since iPods can be formatted 2 ways (Windows / OSX), it would be quite a trick. For a virus to brick an iPod would be a news-worthly event...

I would be interested in hearing more from your husband...

I don't know about infected iPods but our PC died from a fatal limewire STD.;)

We buy our music from Walmart.com and Amazon.com

For those of you who don't like iTunes software, my son installed a program called WinAmp and likes it much better for managing his music. We'd been led to believe the iPod only worked with iTunes...but it isn't so.

I've used www.emusic.com for years. It's $11 a month for 30 songs. You won't find lots of commercial stuff but if you like less mainstream stuff, it's a great site. The thing I love most is discovering artists I wouldn't have found otherwise (The Decemberists come to mind). You can get 50 tracks free if you have someone who is a member send you and invite (I'd be happy too, I get a few tracks free for referring). If anyone is interested, you can e-mail me your e-mail addy and name. I think you might be able to get free tracks w/o the referral but it isn't as many. gandycat@gmail.com

I second the free tracks for Amazon too. That's how I discovered Sarah Harmer. It's fun to find new music :)

There is a legal way to use limewire, pay for it :)

Very, very wrong. You can pay for the limewire software. That will get you a version that does more than the free version. But downloading copyrighted material with the paid for version is still illegal. When you pay for limewire, you are only paying for the software--not the songs.
