...can you answer a question for me? I see its rated R, and all the listings I see say it's only for language. My 15 year old dd would really like to see this movie, what do you think of the R rating? She is in high school, so it's not like she doesn't hear language all day long. I didn't want to read any of the in depth kid review sites, as I don't want to spoil the movie for myself.

Thanks!

I would have no problems with letting a 15 year old see it - it's a great movie!! The R rating is primarily due to one scene with a long stream of profanity. Don't want to give anything away for you, but it makes perfect sense in context and is not done in a vulgar way. I was not offended in the least, and am usually uncomfortable with excessive cursing in a movie.

Hope you both enjoy it!

In one scene, he uses profanity as part of his therapy. He spouts it pretty good for a few minutes, but its nothing the average high school kid hasn't heard. I don't think it deserved the R, I have seen much more questionable material in PG 13 movies.

I would absolutely let a 15 year old see it.

The language is mostly one or two scenes where the therapist asks the stammerer to get mad and curse and the stammerer starts yelling a bunch of profanities (some of them are of the British ilk that your DD probably doesn't hear at school :rotfl:) and he realizes he doesn't shutter while doing so.

Overall a very good movie, DH and I both enjoyed it.

DD12 dragged me to see it. Yes there was bad language, but a 15 yo should hear nothing she hasn't heard before.

The worst thing in the movie is a few curses. There is no nudity or sex. I would let a teen see it.

There is a string of cursing that is completely in context and makes complete sense to the story. I wouldn't hesitate to take my 12-year-old daughter.
Loved this movie, by the way!

The language gets a little blue from time to time, but nothing your child hasn't heard about a million times this year in high school. I took DD17 and she thought it was one of the best movies she has seen--and that includes "Avatar" and "Inception."

I took my DD. No biggie...just the one scene of cussing quickly as part of his therapy as another poster mentioned. It's actually a funny scene. Nothing else 'questionable' in the movie at all (as far as I'm concerned). Take her and enjoy! You'll both like it, I'm sure.

I voted for it to win Best Movie/SAG Award. The entire cast is perfect, not a slacker in the bunch...the movie deserves every accolade it gets and then some.

Stupid it gets an "R"...think of all the movies you've seen than get the "R" rating, is this one as offensive as...hmmmm...oh, I don't know...hmmmm...maybe the 'SAW' series?!? :lmao:

agnes!

I couldn't believe when I read "some language" as the reason for an R rating. I have seen many PG13 movies that I don't want her to see, or that I cringe when we do go.
Thank you all, I think we will try to go tonight. She loves Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, so I think it's a must see.

It's such a wonderful movie. We enjoyed it so much.

She'll love it then-- they all SHINE in it. I am so confused about why Rush wasn't nominated for a Best Supporting Actor nom. Have a great time!

In the UK it was rated 12A (anyone 12 or over can see it unaccompanied, under 12s can see it with an adult at the adult's discretion). I took my 13 year old daughter and she loved it. The way they use the swearing is actually quite funny - it's not violently or abusively used.

Did anyone else realize that the gal who played Mrs. Logue was the one who played Elizabeth to Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy in Pride & Predjudice? I KNEW she looked familar and looked it up as soon as I got home. LOVED the movie!

It's a technical issue having to do with the way that the votes are tabulated. It is probable that most of the votes he got were for the lead category, and that he didn't get enough supporting votes to qualify for a nomination in that category.

It isn't a rule, but there is a widespread belief that it is a jinx to have two actors nominated for work in the lead category in the same film -- traditionally when that has happened it makes it much more likely that neither one of them will win. What probably happened was that faced with the choice of nominating both of them and probably ensuring that they both lost, a large number of actors chose to go only with Firth so as to make it more likely that someone in the film would take the category.

FWIW, here are the voting rules for acting performances:
http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/rule06.html

In Canada it is only rated PG (not even PG13).
In Australia it got a M rating which is one above PG there but not restricted.

The movie is outstanding and you should really go and see it.

The scene with the language is in context versus the gratuitous swearing in most movies.

It is a real shame it is rated R in the USA.
