We are almost sure we will be buying a DVC plan and soon...I am interested in how easy is it to use your points elsewhere...We live about 3 hours north of Williamsburg and enjoy going there...I have received a package from DVC and it has a list of some timeshares in Williamsburg and VA beach that we would love to stay at...Can anyone share how easy it is to get into these other places?...Of course our main goal will be to go to Disney every year but we tend to go to Williamsburg often enough that maybe it would be worth buying more points to be able to stay in the timeshares in VA too...any thoughts would be greatly appreciated..thanks :)

Williamburg, Va is a fairly easy trade. So I would buy another (cheap) timeshares to trade to Williamsburg... You should be able to get one for $2,000 or less - that will trade to most of the places in Williamsburg. Just decide which exchange company - II or RCI. because their rules are different.

I would with II - it has the Marriott plus it does not limit you. RCI has 1 in 3 years or 1 in 4 years. II does limit you to area. So be sure not to buy a timeshare in Williamsburg...

To look at the reverse, do not buy DVC with the intent of trading other places, it's rarely a reasonable option to do so. Look at other ways to get to the non DVC places you are interested in including cash or other timeshares.

I think it's very easy to use your points elsewhere. I've had no problems getting into the DisneyLand hotels (including concierge level at the Grand Californian,) the Biltmore in Phoenix, and the Hotel del Coronado in California. Unfortunately, as you've seen from these other posts (and the many others that will probably come) this is most likely because the DVC points are worth a fair amount of money and it is *rarely* (if ever) a "good deal" to use them anyplace other than the DVC resorts.

However -- it can be done, it is done, and you should certainly include that capability in your calculations when deciding whether or not to buy into DVC. Just don't expect to find anyone who will wholeheartedly endorse the use of DVC points to stay at these other places.

On one hand, paying DVC prices up front to get enough points to be able to stay in the other timeshares on a regular basis seems silly if you can afford a different timeshare that also gets you into these places for less money than DVC. (Or, if putting the amount of money you'd spend on DVC points into an income-generating investment would result in enough money to take a regular trip to these places.) On the other hand, paying DVC prices for more points when you expect to use them on a (semi) regular basis for a "blowout" time at Disney and the other places the rest of the time may, indeed, be a cost-effective way to spend your money.

As always, it's up to you. (Good luck!)
