Hi! Just got back from a trip from NH to Seattle and back. We actually changed planes and had a layover in Newark. We did not actually go through the security in Newark, but we did go through the security at those other airports.
I feel getting to the airport 2 hours early should give you plenty of time. When I say getting to the airport, I mean walking up to the ticket counter. Sometimes when I drive down to the airport, I forget about all that time it takes to park and then take a shuttle in from a satelite lot. Sometimes that takes 25 minutes alone, so plan that in.
The extra time we have to take for increased security is well worth it. You cannot take on anything sharp as a carryon. All bags are subject to search. For all people except maybe 1% of us there is really no substantial change.
Hope that answers your questions, have a fun trip!
Tom.
Just editting the reply to add: make sure you keep checking your flight reservations. Flight times are subject to change as well as just cancelling the flight. One of our flights was moved up by an hour, so checking often as you get close to your departure date is wise.
