IT is SOO COOOOL!! The slide feature for text messages and emails (to get to a word you want to correct for example), the way messages are displayed, etc. and best yet, it now supports NETFLIX!!! It's system version 4.5.596 or droid version 2.3.3 if you don't have it. It runs faster too.

How do I get the upgrade? Dummy it down for me. My HTC Droid says the version is 2.2, Can I update? TIA!

I just go to "phone info" and there is a spot to check for updates and it scans your phone. Not sure if it is the same on the HTC.

Thanks, I found "about phone" in my settings then touched "system updates" but it says mine is up to date.

My DH has the incredible and there is no update for that phone. I have the X and downloaded it, it's nice!

The new Gingerbread release is only out for the Droid X so far and as cool as you think it looks right now - it is far from perfect and in some ways worse than Froyo (2.2).

Most notably - there is a horrific issue with dropped calls, and or dropped service when going from one call > hangup> to next call right after....call starts to go thru then you will get a No Service error (in an area where you will have normally full service or no previous issues.)

The worst issue I uncovered was the change in the Email client app - it is pretty specific but has to do with Group Distribution lists and functionality that previously existed that was taken away...contacts within a group, that had multiple email addresses...you could hit each contact for any and all emails listed in their contact profile...now there is a default single email in the new release...why is that a problem??? if you are a team manager for a child's sports team it is nice to have the child listed as the contact with both parent's contact info (for emergencies this is best) and from a headcount perspective - it makes it way easier to idetify the 10/12/17 kids on the team and ensure that you have included all of them on the email...now you need to double it and if the parents wish to be contacted/informed on multiple email accounts - it simple cannot be done without creating a separate contact...sort of defeats the purpose of being able to identify a work email address and a home email address for a particular contact.

Battery life seems to be stable and there are supposedly issues with the GPS orientation and the camera starting out in landscape mode... haven't really noticed those as they are more annoyances than functionality issues.

Some people on the droid forums are upset about the blacking out of the lockout screen and the overly bright hard buttons - I feel like the portrait style keyboard is slightly smaller as I find myself misspelling things more frequently since the update.

Oh and btw - group distribution lists don't work at all on the Gmail client app...group sonly work on a desktop browser version of gmail - doesn't work on gingerbread or on honeycomb (3.1- Xoom OS)

Sorry to rain on your parade about how great 2.3 is - but there's as much improved from 2.2 as there needs to be re-fixed in my view.

I have had SEVERAL conversations with Motorola Level 3 tech support about these issues and there is no targeted resolution.

Sheesh...I have the Droid X and had no idea they even did upgrades....LOL It's searching for updates now....

I have a question tho, if I do upgrade and don't like it can you downgrade to the 2.2?

Nope...not unless you root your phone and then you have to find an old release of Froyo to put on.

Look at the end of the day it isn't horrendous - but for my paritcular circumstances - I feel that I lost some very necessary and useful functionality...are there workarounds - sure, just not the right way to go about it. Google/Motorola really need to listen to their customers here and track the complaints on their support forums as some of the issues are very basic functionality - that existed previously.

I suspect the issue around contact lists has to do with GMAIL being a web based mail set up and the ability to write malicious scripts that can grab contact lists and contact info easily is what they are trying to prevent. Unless they are just looking at it from a pure bandwidth perspective and do not want people to have the ability to use a free email service as the equivalent of a "corporate" mail server with Distribution lists and the ability to forward messages easily to those lists.

Since I don't understand most of what you are talking about, I don't think I will have issues with them :lmao::lmao:. Ok, I do. I don't use my phone for sending group emails, it's just easier on the computer. I do agree that the landscape buttons are smaller and not sure yet what the numbers are for in the top line of the keyboard. One thing that really sold me on the X was the size of the keyboard buttons. I don't expect a phone to be perfect so I guess I am ok with some of the flaws. I haven't had it long enough to notice dropped calls, etc.

I have a droid from verizon that I got in 2009. I hate it. The battery never lasts all day even though I don't talk or text on it much if at all. It just sits on my desk.

Sometimes when people call me its ringing on their end but never comes through on my end. No missed call or anything. So unless they leave a message I never know I missed their call. My DH says he has to call me several times before I pick up usually. Texts don't come through sometimes either.

The screen locks up sometimes and won't do anything and I have to turn the whole phone off. Sometimes its so bad I have to take the battery out to get the phone to turn off.

I took it in the Verizon store the other day becasue I was so fed up with it. The guy said unfortunately I bought one of the first ones and they were the worst and have all sorts of problems. I'm not due for an upgrade until September so I'm stuck with it until then. He says the newer ones are much better but I might go with the Iphone when I upgrade.

I love the new look, but did your smiley button on your text keyboard go away? I loved being able to add a smiley by just hitting the button when I was texting.

What is the slide feature??
