Anyone Taking Photos of Tonight's Eclipse?

We've got a heavy overcast here so it doesn't look promising. :(

Yep, looks to be mostly clear tonight in NC so I will give it a try. I did some testing last night but the images were not as sharp as expected. It turns out my tripod wiggles a little when the camera is set for verticals.

I found this by attaching a laser level to the camera and doing some test shots, watching the laser spot wiggle as the mirror flipped up. Locking up the mirror helps a lot so I hope tonight's photos are better.

I was planning on it. All day it was bright and sunny with no clouds. About an hour ago it started clouding up, now 2 hours prior to the climax of the eclipse it has started raining. GRRRRRRRRRRR Now I'm hearing that the rain might turn to snow later tonight so this is no quickly passing storm. Looking in the sky in the direction of where the moon will be coming there are a lot of dark clouds. Not a good sign. Looks like I might have to wait till August when the next lunar eclipse is scheduled.

Not the best but I'll take it for now.
The plan was to go to a dark spot but that didn't work so this was taken from the brightly lit parking lot of a restaurant just before we went to dinner at 7:00. The horizon was cloudy and the photo is not as sharp as I had hoped for. Next time...

That's a very nice shot.

Nice shot Bob!! How do you get a shot like that?? I have 3 digital cameras and CANNOT get any night photos to take-don't know what the problem is!

This photo was taken with a Canon 30D and a 70-200 with a 1.4x extender (for a total of 280mm). I used a tripod and set the exposure for -2 stops in "P" mode (as I recall, I have the EXIF info at home).

This is a very tight crop, the image of the moon is only a few hundred pixels across and the image was sharpened heavily. Our next good lunar eclipse is in February, I'm going to try to borrow a telescope!

I didn't even realize that the eclipse was happening until a few minutes before it did. At the time, it was still too bright out, and we were heading to a friend's house for "game night" - and they have tall trees all around. I brought my gear and kept looking out the window, and saw a reddish glow through the trees at one point, but never was able to actually see it during the eclipse.

When we got home (~11:30pm), I did go into the backyard and took a few photos. I think they're not TOO bad considering the ambient light and the fact that there were pretty heavy clouds moving quickly across the sky, so these are shot through those. Still, I'm reasonably content, and it did give my an excuse to drag out the old 400mm and screw-mount adapter. :)

This is a 100% crop... ISO 200, 1/90th second, I think the aperture was F11? It's an older lens so that information isn't transmitted. The photo is untouched other than the basic raw-jpg conversion and cropping.
