Anyone take Tylenol PM?

I always have the worst time getting to sleep, it will be 12:30 or 1AM and I'm just not tired. Then, I end up sleeping till 10-11AM. So, I bought a thing of Tylenol PM. After reading the label, it lists the use for "sleeplessness" - is that what I really have? Is it safe to use? Anyone out there take it, and how well does it work? How long does it take to "set in"? Will I wake up after 8 hours or so of sleep?

Thanks. :)

It does help me, but as soon as I feel sleepy I need to go to bed otherwise I can't get to sleep. I sleep pretty good but if I want to get up at 5:30 I need to take it by 8:00 or I am very sleepy when I wake.

If I take 2, I am very groggy the next morning. If I take one, sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. It wouldn't want to get in the habit of taking something like that every night, but maybe it would help you sort of "reset" your body clock.
Are you doing all the usually non-drug recommended things like avoiding caffiene and alcohol, no big meals too close to bedtime, getting some exercise during the day? And reducing stress (yea, right, huh? )

Be VERY careful if you start using these to help you sleep. I took them when my mom passed away and became very very addicted to them. I had problems for about 2 months where I could not sleep at all without them. I had to be weened from them.

Well, I do have some caffiene, not a whole lot, though. Big meals - not close to bed time. Exercise - yeah, I get some during the day. Stress - probably a big problem. With the school year starting back up, I need to be able to get to sleep at night to be up at 6AM. But, like one of the posters said, it's something I don't want to take on a regular basis.

Thanks for the replies. I'd like to hear from more of you. ;)

I take one sometimes when I just can't settle down to sleep. I wake up ok on one but groggy on two.

I was on them, and it did help for a while but then I became more groggy during the day. I'm better off during the day when I don't have them and I'll just deal with the sleepless nights.

Usually I go lay on the couch and nod off there.

What keeps you awake? Myself, it was my husband's snorning. I got some really good wax (moldable) ear plugs and now sleep much better. I still have my moments but I too still have the couch when needed.

The best thing to avoid a sleepless night: no soda at all, no tea or coffee after 3pm. No wine, red or white, Get some exercise in the early evening. For some reason if you work up a sweat then cool off. your body goes into a restful mode.

good luck!

I can never sleep during the school year. I use these as a last resort. I took two one time and went to the mall. When I got back an hour later, I almost fell over when I got out of the car I was so drowsy. I went to bed then, and felt great when I woke up.

You need to reset your schedule. Don't let yourself sleep until 10:00. Set your alarm and get out of bed early so you'll be tired at night.

Give yourself a routine for getting to sleep and don't lay around in bed and watch tv. If you still can't fall asleep get out of bed and go watch tv or something, but don't do it in bed. Your body needs to see the bed as a place to sleep not to be awake.

Do your best not to think about things when you go to bed. I know, that's really hard, but you have to try. Do some deep breathing, try and clear your head.

I would only resort to the Excedrin for extreme cases, don't begin to rely on it.

Good luck and sweet dreams!!

It doesn't work on me. The sleep aid ingredient is benadryl, all antihistimines make me hyper instead of sleepy.

I only use Tylenol or Excedrin PM when I have pain plus can't sleep.

If I'm just having insomnia, I use Unisom 25mg sleep tabs. They put me to sleep and I don't feel like I'm in a fog the next morning. The extra strength 50mg tabs are too much for me.

I have had a terrible time sleeping lately (moving stress!), so I have been taking Simply Sleep... .its from the makers of Tylenol, but without the tylenol in it. Its just for sleeping.

TAKE IT EARLY! If I have to get up in the morning, I take it no later than 9pm, earlier if I can. It takes about 30 minutes to really take effect. It doesn't knock me out so much that I don't wake up during the night, or that I can't hear noises, it just makes me wake up LESS during the night, and when I do wake up, I get back to sleep faster.

Sometimes in the morning I feel more drowsy, but others, I have slept so well, I'm up and raring to go!

I noticed a couple of weeks ago, I was taking it almost every night. That made me nervous, so I tried sleeping without any simply sleep this week and have had no trouble sleeping.

I try to reserve it for the nights when I'm feeling WIRED at 8 or 9 pm and know I'll have a hard time sleeping. Try not to get in the habit of NEEDING it to fall asleep.

I don't like taking something to help me sleep, but if I have to, I cut a Tylenol PM in 1/2 and it puts me out!
