Anyone take their pets on the plane?

I'm flying to Tampa with the DGD's to visit their Grandfather for a week in April. Hopefully we'll get a day at WDW Anyway, I want to bring my Parrotlet, which is a small, and I mean very small parrot with us. I'm shocked at the prices the airlines charge. Delta wants $75 & Usairways is $100. That's only for one way . Now I'm having second thoughts on bringing her.

I have big dogs who would have to ride in cargo, so NO they will never fly.

My brother used to travel with his cat, but since they started to charge so much, they haven't bothered to do it again. I doubt I'd do it for that price as well.

Can your bird ride in a small cage under your seat? I think the high charges are only if they are in the cargo hold. I guess it would depend which airline you're using?

I have brought my small yorkie on a plane 3 times. He is in an airline approved bag that fits under the seat in the cabin. It is costly ($80 one way), but worth it in some situations when I can't find anyone to watch him.
I am not sure what the rules are with birds.

I will soon be driving a long distance because of my 2 dogs. They're coming with us, not goint in cargo!!

I contacted one of the airlines, and a pet can be dog, cat, bird etc.
Any that are in the cabin of course have to be in an approved cage that will fit under the seat. They make no exceptions for the size of the pet. If it was a rountrip fare for $100, I would do it. But, one way is way too much...that's more than my fare.

If it makes you feel any better, to fly my golden retriever, my two cats, my sisters small dog and her two cats to Orlando, it is going to cost us almost $2500. They charge by weight, so a large dog really gets expensive. Since 911, you can't just ship your pets as cargo by yourself. You have to use a pet relocation service known to the airlines. It really adds up.
