Anyone take meds for motion sickness before going to DL?

What is your drug of choice? I get motion sick easily when it comes to video motion (like Star Tours like rides or even watching my kids play the Wii). I don't really like to spin, so I will not be riding the teacups, Dumbo, or any like that. Sometimes all the motion makes me dizzy, not sick, but dizzy, and I HATE that feeling. I probably should ask my own doc, but I thought some of you might know. Do you know of any that you can't take while taking other stuff? I currently take Allegra and Nasonex daily for allergies. Thanks!

I have similar dizzy problems which were getting worse with age. So I tried both Dramamine and Bonine. Dramamine non-drowsy formula still made me achingly sleepy so no good, but the Bonine worked great. I take one tablet the evening before I we go to the parks. Its effect lasts all the next day and I can go on Star Tours, Space, Screamin, TSMM - everything.

I used to take Dramamine, but like others, even the non-drowsy version made me very sleepy for the whole day. Bonine was better, so if I have to take something, that tends to be the option I pick. Have you tried the Sea Band wristlets (or something similar)? They seem to work okay for me.

I do this as well and it works great :thumbsup2

When we were last there, we noticed quite a few people had little white stickers behind their ears. We finally asked someone what it was and they said it helped with motion sickness. Who knew! :confused3. Looks like plenty of people come prepared :thumbsup2

Another vote for Bonine! I too take it the night before and worked wonders. The first year I went on Star Tours I got so sick I didn't start feeling better till well into the evening and even then I didn't feel 100%. Last year took the meds before our flight and then one each night and was good to go!

Okay... so it actually works for ST? My very first time to DL way back when I was 16 was the one and only time I rode this. I got SO sick on it and I never get sick on rides. I've been terrified to ride it ever since but kinda want to try it again, or at least take the kids on it. Is Bonine prescription only? I'm in Canada so it might be different. I'll look into it!

Another vote for Bonine. I rode ST multiple times and didn't feel sick once.

I'm not sure about Canada, but in the US it's just on the shelf next to Dramamine. If you can't find it in Canada, you can pick it up pretty much everywhere when you get here.

I, too, use Bonine (meclizine is the generic name) which is over the counter. Dramamine just makes me sleepy. I take the meclizine in the morning before going into the park and it works great. We also carry ginger chews (chewy candy made of ginger) in case that nausea pops up on a ride...quick chew and everything is better! I have never tried the wrist bands but have heard they work well on (some) people. I stick with meclizine.

My go to drug is long lasting Gravol. I take in the morning along with my usual antihistamine, and it works like a charm and lasts the entire day. I don't get nausea or dizzy for the remainder of the day. Candied ginger also helps.

Bonine or Dramamine for me. I don't really need it at DL unless I want to ride the teacups, but always need it for Mission Space at WDW. Strangely enough, Body Wars always made me extremely ill, but I'm fine on Star Tours, even though it's the same ride system. :confused3

Add me to the list of Bonine users. And, add me to the list of those who get drowsy from non-drowsy Dramamine!

So, here's my schedule:
Eat breakfast. Take Bonine with breakfast.
Apply SeaBands at breakfast.
Carry on as normal.
Take Bonine with dinner/evening snack (around 8pm).

You can take 1-2 Bonine at a time--I have found taking 1 twice a day (so I'm still not exceeding any usage guidelines) keeps me covered best. And Seabands help me so much! Just make sure that the Seabands are placed correctly. Many people assume you just put them on your wrist, but there's a specific point it needs to push on.

In the past, the only thing that has worked for me to help with dizziness from my vertigo was meclizine, prescribed by my doctor. I've been told there is an over the counter version available, but it isn't as strong. I've been on it for over 5 years, on an as needed basis. I've found it to be the best medication for me; however for me, it doesn't stop the dizziness. Instead, it helps curb the nausea caused by the dizziness.

Currently, I'm trying essential oils to cut down on the number of medicines I'm taking. Yesterday, I made it through a full day of coasters and kiddie rides at Six Flags without my meclizine, and I was able to sleep on my right side last night, something I haven't tried to do in a long time because my right ear is the one that triggers vertigo dizzy spells for me. I was also able to fly in a plane last month without any issues, and I only used oils. I'm going to keep experimenting with different oil combinations before my Nov. DL trip to see if I can do without my meclizine because it makes me sleepy and zaps my energy. Right now, I'm using Frankincense, Peppermint, and Lemongrass daily. I'm thinking about adding Ginger.

I get terrible motion sickness too. Last August I took two Bonine before I went to bed every night. Great for getting to sleep in a motel. I don't usually don't sleep good in motels/hotels. Then I wore sea-bands during the day. I was able to do a lot more than usual but it wasn't completely gone :( The most adventurous ride I went on was Screamin' and it made me feel barfy. I sipped a sprite for about 30 minutes while the rest of my crew went on Mickey's Fun Wheel and then I felt better. But I didn't feel up to anymore rides either. I'm so jealous of people who don't suffer from motion sickness. I want to do everything but it really takes all the fun out if I feel like I'm going vomit, or I actually do vomit!

and from KittyFish:Those white stickers are scopolamine transdermal patches, available with a prescription.

A side effect is blurred vision! I couldn't read a book for 6 weeks!

Bonine! Used it for the first time flying this summer and 1 lasted for the day, no side effects for me. I was hesitant and always opted for being sick because I was afraid of the side effects of many motion sickness drugs but I eventually got sick of being sick more and I will never travel without Bonine again (the ones I took were raspberry flavored chewables, the only stuff my target had, and they tasted awful so take with some food). Btw, the package recommends taking them about an hour before, so if you use that plan ahead.
