Anyone take Bonine?

I take Bonine for the plane ride and the rides at Disney. It doesn't make me tired.

I take generic Antivert, otherwise known as Meclizine. I get the prescription form of it but you can get the very same thing I take over the counter. Meclizine 25 mg. It does not make you drowsy. Or it never has made me drowsy and I have BAD motion sickness. I get motion sick very easy and Meclizine is the only thing I trust to take because I know it works. (If I remember to take it that is)

Used Bonine when we cruised with Carnival while passing Hurricane Irene and the seas were crazy ROUGH, I never felt sick. It didn't make me drowsy either.

I've taken Bonine also thanks to recommendations from these boards and it worked terrifically for me. I, too, took them on my cruise last year and never had a problem! I like it much better than Dramamine - no drowsiness!

So glad I stumbled across this thread! I, too, get motion sickness on some rides, and I usually use Dramamine. It makes me so tired, though, that after several hours I'm ready to go back to bed! :faint:

I'll have to try Bonine and ginger root before my next trip.

I have never had motion sickness from flying, riding in a car, etc, except a couple of times on REALLY rough ocean water on deep sea fishing trips. Neither Dramamine nor Bonine helped that. :) I think it really only helps for minor motion sickness, so it probably would help for rides & airplanes I guess.

I think I'm going to purchase both brands and take Dramamine (drowsy version) on our overnight flight to Disney, lol. I'll use the less-drowsy Bonine if needed for the parks. I think I'll need all the help I can get sleeping on our red-eye flight.

I actually take both regular Dramamine and Bonine. A bit much? Perhaps, but I've been since I started the combo. Yes, I get sleepy and it knocks me out for a bit, but generally only for an hour or so and then I'm awake again and fine and making a run for the ME line! :lmao:

Do you ever feel sick taking the mixture of two anti-vomitting medicines? I have always take Dramamine but still feel nauseous on rides. And how do you take the two?

Thanks.

count me as another Bonine fan.
I have been diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which for me means if something gets out of whack, it will take forever to reset itself and I can't get a fixed, stable horizon until it resets. Doc prescribed meclizine when I had to go the emergency department to get it to settle down.

So now I use it as a preventative medicine - I take Bonine before every flight, before every long car ride ... and I take one pill every morning at WDW because I never know what might set it off, and I don't want to ruin any day. If I do start to get dizzy after a ride, I'll take another and it settles down. Haven't had a problem from the meds since I started taking it.

Agree with others ... give it a try, especially if you have had problems with Dramamine in the past. I think its an effective alternative.

Another fan of meclizine... I've taken both in perscription form and Bonine. It doesn't make me tired. I've always struggled a bit with motion sickness since childhool (in my 50's), always avoided spinning rides like Teacups... I used Bonine when we did a whale watch and other people were sick over the side of the boat but not me. Then two years ago out of the blue I have an acute bout of vertigo :scared1:. Very scary and upsetting... was given meclizine in the e.r. Now I carry it with me and if I feel it coming on I take a pill. I was quite worried the first trip back to Disney after vertigo so I took Bonine as a precaution on my first day which was HS... I was able to ride RnRC and ToT no problem but still avoided Star Tours (have never done well on simulators... but I can do Soarin :confused3). I didn't have to take it the rest of the trip but would have if I'd felt any dizziness coming on.

Well, if you're old like me, you may remember a show called "Myth Busters" They did find ginger helped! (ginger candy can be spicy if you're not used to it, but it truly helps - if you like sushi, pickled ginger is awesome!)

That patch? Be very careful, it works while you're there, but when you take that patch off, there is a 'rebound' affect, it was awful for me (others report differently)

and I'll also disclose I have Meniers Disease (vertigo on steroids) and I have found Rock n Roller coaster does put those "rocks" back in their place in my inner ear - but its awful trying to get that far! Dramamine and Bonine (the meclizine is the active ingredient) do help = and like pp vicb posted be very careful about Star Tours! I stay far away!

You replied to a 3 year old dormant thread. The poster you quoted has not been active here for several months. You should probably consult your regular pharmacist about the wisdom of taking these meds in combination.

Dramamine makes me very drowsy, but I use it for nausea and vomiting at home. Bonine works for me for motion sickness in cars, planes and cruising, without any appreciable drowsiness ( and I didn't have a problem drinking alcohol while I was on it). I do know that many cruisers take it at bedtime if they have a problem with drowsiness. As with any medication, you never know if you will have a particular side effect until you try it.

I agree with people who advise to try whatever medicine or ginger BEFORE your trip... you'd hate to lose a day trying something that doesn't work well for you.

DH and I took Bonine on a recent day cruise and felt perfectly fine while everyone else around us got sea sick-for us, at least, Bonine worked perfectly, no tiredness, no side effects at all. However, we didn't try drinking any alcohol.

I also take 1/2 a Bonine when we cruise or fly and don't have any problems. I can't take dramamine, it knocks me out.

I use Bonine when flying and for rides at Disney. It does not make me drowsy for the most part although I think there have been a couple times where it seemed to. Maybe it was more a matter of what time of day I took it but I'm really not sure.

It helps but does not eliminate my nausea. I rarely actually throw up I just get super queasy and dizzy and it can last. I used it so I could go on Test Track and Soarin for the first time recently and it worked great. I get sick at IMAX movies so Soarin worried me but I was completely fine. Test Track I got a tad queasy but it didn't last.
