Anyone stockpiling food?

Has anyone else's state's emergency management put out a virus emergency supply list? Ours did and it reads like we are either expecting to have no power and no water or like we are planning to evacuate to somewhere. Its no wonder people are buying stuff they don't need.
Don't think so but if the state made one I would guess they need to take into account the needs of all the state residents and leave it to individuals to pick and choose. I ignored the CDC list suggesting bottled water since it doesn't pertain to my area.

I'm guessing that was a situation where the page had been pre-done for hurricane prep, and someone got the order to put up the emergency supply list and didn't think to question if a different one needed to be used instead of the usual.

That's must be it exactly because I am really unsure why I need a copy of my dog's vaccination record in the event I get quarantined. He isn't going anywhere and his vet has all that which is where he goes in the event of a hurricane. "Special or Important Pictures" was even on the list. I just kept thinking "where exactly am I going"?

I feel really strong that a lot of folks need to slow down and think. "Do I really need this" "Will I really use this"

I have bought a lot of food (and non-food) items. Nothing we won’t eventually need or be able to donate to the food pantry or other organization. I think I am prepared.

No I'm not stockpiling food. Panic breeds more panic. You may think it's silly to buy lots of TP, but then you see slightly empty shelves at the store and wonder, Maybe I should do it too. It just perpetuates itself. We all need to slow down, think, and not hoard things. just my opinion, and probably not a popular one. I don't judge others for doing what they feel they must do, but stop and think first. Apparently, according to the news, China's rate of people becoming infected is slowing down now. Hope this is true.

We're in earthquake country, so we always have plenty of calories available but the diet can get pretty boring/monotonous.

We stocked up mostly on what we call "vitamins" - the things that make whatever is available better. Hot sauce, soy sauce, canned parmesan cheese, tomato paste, salad dressing, etc. We also got some extra treats as morale boosters.

Oh, and coffee. Even if you aren't a coffee drinker, coffee (I think it's the caffeine) can improve shortness of breath for up to 4 hours.

Just got back from shopping. Grabbed carrots, mac and cheese, eggs, chips and Dawn dish soap from our local grocery. People were being crazy in there buying water (still don't get it--you won't convince me). No TP, wipes or sanitizer. One guy was buying slabs of meat and lots of taco shells. I want to go to his house!

Went to Walgreens for children's Advil and Easter basket presents/candy. No TP at all. Luckily I don't need it.

There is practically no one in the streets of Manhattan or in the subways.

The Broadway theatres are now closed. So are the museums & the libraries are closing tomorrow.

You know where all the people are?

WHOLE FOODS. :crowded::crowded::crowded::crowded::crowded:

If people are going to infect each other, it will be while everyone is piled, in close proximity, into the stores stocking up. Why isn't there a crowd capacity cap on the stores where all the people are?

I think making a run on stores and buying out the place is a bit crazy. That being said, I'll stop by and purchase a few extras...if there's anything left. I know we have plenty of food for about two to three weeks worth of food, but I'm going to need some extra caffeine, so I'll stop and purchase a couple extra cases of soda. I drink about one to two a day, so I'll be fine for a while.

lol I actually mentioned this to my husband last night..we all aren't practicing social distancing while getting the groceries..to you know practice social distancing.

But at least the contact was fairly limited and quickly done.

The things is if you did an online order you probably wouldn't get anything. That would have been the one time where idealy having someone deliver it to you or picking it up in the car was best but there wasn't enough stock to go around. I saw very little in the carts of those putting together online order grocery orders at Walmart in a time where normally they are zooming in and around in a flurry of activity. There simply wasn't inventory available so you would be taking a great risk that all the planning for items and you would have been empty handed.

Early last week was probably ok. But not this week especially the last couple of days.

Nah that’s not what was going on here. I think people down here just go into their normal hurricane panic mode and buy water as a reflex.

Actually I am stocking up more than normal on the regular 5 gallon bottles I buy because people are in a frenzy here and water is starting to be limited at some places.
I was in BJs this morning and it was a madhouse, no 5 gallon water bottles left, and there was a limit of 2 on any water product that was. Checkout line was way too long so I went to the grocery store.
I got 5- 4 gallon bottles there because there was no limit. I'm not stocking up because I think it's the end of the world, I'm stocking up because water is all I, dh and my dd drink and I know that by Monday shelves will be clear everywhere. My family goes through alot of water so I'm just making sure it's here for us because we use it. I could just say I'll wait until they get the next shipment in, but with how crazy it has gotten in just 24 hours here I don't know how long all this madness is going to last and now I don't have to deal with it.
I met a man there filling his cart for the same reason.
I don't know what people are buying so much water (that they normally wouldn't) but I think it would be pretty funny to find out it's all because we think everyone else is panicking and really it's just us
Either way I don't have to worry about getting my water and that's all I care about at this point.

Just back from the Upper Westside of Manhattan.

The streets were filled with the regular amt of nannies and SAHMs with small children. And the quadruple wide strollers being pushed by the oblivious (2 moms with double wide strollers walking side by side equals GRRR in this part of the city, LOL) . More school aged children than the norm since several private schools have closed for one reason or another. Not many obviously left work early adults around so I guess they'll make their normal appearance starting at 4:00PM.

Went down to Zabar's in the 80s and bought my yogurt maker. I was able to pay upstairs so really didn't pay attention to the food selling floor past the cheese section which is always a bottleneck of sorts. I bet the prepared food section was packed and it took serious willpower to not buy rugalah from the bakery. Ran into my frmr next door neighbor in the street outside of Citarella's in the 70s (specializes in fish which I prefer to buy day of use so bypassed entering) directing the delivery person on how to pack her groceries into the car. Knowing her habits she probably bought a ton of prepared food.
Stopped at Murray's on Broadway in the 90s, received dagger eyes from customers waiting for service, and added some items to my Saturday order. I'm lucky since they do not normally deliver to the Bronx but one of the workers lives near me, I'm a long time customer and thus get the benefit of my patronage.

Jumped on the train at 96th and CPW by which time the yogurt maker's weight was beginning to make it's presence known, and here I am, longing for a Campari and soda. Note to self: put in a liquor order online.

Our local grocery store (nyc) was packed before - bought basic stuff that I would normally buy during weekend shopping - bread aisle was empty - no water bottles - no eggs. On another note - was in Dollar Tree before and heard a rumor that the supermarkets are going to close due to overcrowding!?

I popped into Walmart and Publix this morning, because I needed to get food. We had not planned on being home, but now that we cancelled our trip, I needed to get some stuff.

Walmart was completely out of: TP, paper towels, tp wipes, clorox products, lysol products, alcohol (wipes and bottles), hydrogen peroxide, masks (I wanted to check...DH can get a box from his doctor if required), all disposable gloves, hand soap, dish soap, bleach, tissues and most of the cold medicine. The candy and chip aisles were decimated, as was pasta, pasta sauces, pancake mixes, and soups. Eggs, OJ, bread and baking stuff (flour, sugar) were all almost out. I did manage to get the last bag of KA AP flour and KA wheat flour; I was out of the AP and almost out of the wheat. Also, pet supplies were very low.

Publix was out of: TP, clorox products, alcohol bottles, hydrogen peroxide, and disposable gloves. I did pick up some more tp wipes, paper towels and tissues (because I am low on those). Plenty of food, but I did grab the last 2 6pks of cup of noodles for DS. They were fully stocked with everything else, including meats, fresh produce, frozen, etc. I didn't check medicines, I forgot to go down that aisle.

I ordered from Target (and we'll see if I get it all): tissues, cold medicine, throat lozenges, and paper towels. Just in case stuff.

I felt so awkward having a basket full of stuff at both Walmart and Publix. At least at Walmart, some of the cart was not panic buying...2 new curtain rods and curtains (for the spare/DS bedrooms, since the blinds aren't keeping the sun/heat out well enough), shower curtains (needed to replace) and some new underwear and socks for DS (needed to replace). I did look like a panic buyer at Publix, because I had 28 bags of frozen veggies in my cart..but that is 2 weeks worth in my house. That's my normal buying, lol.

I asked DD if they stockpiled and how long they could last under quarantine. She said, maybe 24 hours. I'm like what?!? DD says, if they are quarantined, she'd be so stressed...it would all be gone by the next day! 😳🤣

I'll stop by and purchase a few extras...if there's anything left.

That's what I tried to do in Whole Foods. I don't usually buy a lot there. But this particular Whole Foods has fresh pasta by the pound. Just like their cookies by the pound, I can reach into the display and pull out the amount of fresh pasta I want. They have a great goat cheese & herb ravioli. :lovestruc I decided to get extra to freeze.

Right?!? :lmao:

I tried to cross the store to get some almonds and I saw there was about 40 people criss-crossing back & forth along the route I'd have to take, there & back. It reminded me of this Seinfeld episode where George had to get something across the road and it became an arcade game - with the white truck being the equivalent of someone with Coronavirus. :duck: In the end, I just said, "Forget it! I'm not weeding though all those people." :p

lol oh I remember that Seinfeld bit!

My husband def. has less patience with people. In hindsight I should have been the one to dodge in and around people and he should have been the one to cross things off our list.

My way is the Midwestern Nice way: "ope excuse just need to get ____" "oh I'm sorry can I just get by ya real quick?" His way is to just get frustrated that people are constantly in the way but do it silently while stewing about how annoying it is that people are in the way
