Anyone stockpiling food?

It's amazing how this thread changed. New York is somewhat getting bettter what you can find in stores. Toilet paper is still tough to find, But Chicken is beginning to reemerge in stores. Apaarently chicken is the choice meat of NY for an apocalypse.

Ha! When is a chicken not really a chicken? When it's really a huge turkey drumstick being masqueraded as a chicken leg. 🍗 I went to my local supermarket 2 Fridays ago, after the request to self-isolate turned into a mandatory one. The meat cases were decimated. There was only a 6 packages of anything left. :( If I wanted any fresh meat, I had to come back and see if a new shipment was coming in on Monday, when I know they usually replenish.

I get there and there is barely more than Fri. So they did replenish, but I wasn't early enough. There are several packages of what are clearly large turkey drumsticks. There is no brand label. They were packed in white styrofoam and just wrapped in plastic. So the meat counter guy at our store pre-wrapped them all. We usually don't have turkey drumsticks in the store, except at Thanksgiving time. They are tough to cook, dry and tough to chew and they have that huge inedible vein running down the leg.

I look down at the store label: "Store picked chicken drumsticks." :rolleyes2 I guess that's code for: "Times are tough. It's slim pickings and this is the only extra poultry our supplier was able to give us. So we picked it for you. But, since you guys don't buy turkey, we'll call this 'chicken' and call it a day. Take it or leave it."

Since it was the only "chicken" there was left, I had to take a couple packages. I broiled a couple. Yep, cooks like a turkey leg and is tough to chew when cooked like a chicken leg. I'm going to have to make turkey "chicken" soup with it. :stir:

I already feel like I'm rationing! I have warned my family, however, that I am going to be the food police and NOTHING will be wasted as has been the case in the past. No new food will be made until the food in the fridge has been consumed. The tendency, despite my griping, has been to make new food and then other food gets shuffled to the back and forgotten. While they've gotten better, I have had a meeting with the fam and it's all hands on deck with "no wasting" and cleaning. So far it's going really well! Stay safe, everyone!!
In general, I try not to waste food but sometimes it happens. We are a big family so sometimes it’s hard to predict exact portions. Since this whole thing started I haven’t even wasted a single bite of food. We had our last broccoli bunch that was starting to wither and I decided to go ahead and boil it so it wouldn’t go bad overnight.

What I am wondering has it just been certain places that have stocked up. In New York we have, like I said people for most part I think have stocked up and some things are finally coming back. But what areas have not had to do this yet or has the entire country pretty much done same?

I keep thinking surely everyone here has stocked up and this will slow down. But Walmart continues to be packed and out of everything by the afternoon.

What we “think” they are doing is stocking at night and just letting it run out through the day and then stocking back up. Going by the app, they seem to have most stuff in the morning.

Right now, it’s dog food, canned drinks, and frozen stuff like pizzas that they are running out of and staying out.

It's finally hit in the Bronx. People were lined around the block to enter a local Key Food. In part it was due to social distancing w/i the market but those rules went out the window for the queue outside the store. Bizarre especially since this is not one of my favorite stores. Was thinking of picking up a few items for last night's meal but decided it wasn't worth chancing it there and jumped on Metro North to Harlem. There's a great butcher shop there called Harlem Shambles. Normally I phone in an order and let DGD pick it up after school but that's not happening now so they got to see the face that goes w/ the disembodied telephone voice, LOL.
There is so much you can do with chicken and it's an easily digest-able protein; I know if I gave DGD chicky 7 days @ week she'd be happy even if I was bored out of my skull.
Still no large packs of TP available and I've stopped looking for the moment. I get no kick from disinfectant wipes or hand sanitizer so it didn't even register to check.

Its interesting to go back to the beginning of this post, Feb. 28th, and read peoples thoughts.

Life was so different then.

I wonder if the folks that posted a hard "no" on stocking up ever did, or wished they did.

Me, we have always had a stocked pantry, because I always stock up when there are good deals. Back in Feb. we started grabbing extra stuff every time we went to the store. Not massive amounts, but definitely extra. I talked to my oldest son and Mom and suggested they do the same and happily they did. When things went crazy around here a week ago at the grocery stores, we had already gotten what we needed in the previous weeks.

Have had 3 month emergency food supply for almost two years and wife called me nuts. Now I ain’t so “nuts” anymore.

Next thing is closing interstate migration and suspension of habeus corpus, then they’ll suspend remaining Const rights including 2A purchase rights and then my friends, there will be problems.

Neighborhood Walmart here pretty stocked up. No bread, no TP, no Clorox wipes, no charmin wipes, no Tylenol. Fair amount of people shopping. More people stocking than shopping.

Yes, I've found a really absorbent paper towel, down especially near the bottom where the wetness happens does a lot to save the greens from getting mushy & slimy, once the bag has been opened.

And tonight, I soaked what was left in a bag, that looked like it might only be good for another day, in cold water. They really perked back up, especially the romaine stems, which brown the quickest. They actually look less brown. I skimmed off the little bits that floated to the top. They are the stuff that gets slimy and I think starts making the rest go bad. I sorted through and rinsed off the leaves that had bits stuck to it. Then they went in a colander to drain before being patted down with paper towels. Then dry ones to store with them. I think I have a few more days of life to them. (Nutrition may be another matter.)

I'll have to try leaving the bag open. Someone showed me how she is able to make a head of iceberg lettuce last quite a while by storing it in a paper bag instead of in plastic. It might be the same idea, allowing air to permeate around the lettuce.

I keep lettuce and other greens in a gallon size ziplock bag, but leave the top partially unzipped, and make a few knife slits in the bag.

Anti bacterial wipes have been hard to find. At my local store there were 4 containers of them tucked way back, where short people couldn't see them. So glad I am tall!

NO I don't stock up with more than I'll use. and I still feel that way!
