Anyone stockpiling food?

So I seriously thought about having 14 days worth of food in our house. We are a family of 7 adults if my college kids were sent home. That would mean that I would need to have food for 21 meals a day and 294 meals for 14 days. Who has that space??? I mean I have big boys who need to have at least 2,500 calories a day. I have extra canned goods some meat in the freezer and peanut butter. I could make it a week but I highly doubt I could make it 2 weeks. We would be eating the spices.

Also for water who can store 98 gallons of water??? I am not worried about water since the system is mostly automated and the city would want to keep it running, but I am in awe of anyone who is able to store that much food and water.

Yeah, I love it when you see on tv and they say you need these supplies....... per day/ per person......1 gallon of water per person, food, clothes, paper products and then make it seem like it will all fit in this 2 cubic foot container and you can just carry it will you.

My DD has 4 kids (3-15) at home, so they are six, but she figures they can live for at least a week on cereal alone. Hence the reason I bought some shelf stable milk for her.

The problem with that is my 16 year old son eats an entire box of cereal himself so I would need to have like 20 or more boxes of cereal....

That looks like my fridge. We buy our groceries a day at a time. I gave DH a list for dinner tonight. Wednesday is wings night, which is takeout. I have no clue what we're having the rest of the week much less for 2 weeks. Needless to say, we would be totally unprepared for a quarantine. I may be back here in a day or two begging somebody to help me put together a list for 2 weeks worth of food. :o

so you encourage your geographically closest neighbors to stockpile so that your big boys can do a raid, ideally encouraging the neighbors to stockpile in accordance with your own tastes in food :teeth:

I have a little bit but it's like someone said it's what i would be doing for storm season just earlier. We have had tornadoes in February which is way out of the norm so i'm expecting a bad storm season. (I could be complete wrong i hope so but you know) We are a 2 person house so it's not like we have to have a lot to have extra anyway. Plus i only buy groceries every 2 weeks anyway. Not enough to go crazy but just enough to be a little prepared.

not really stockpiling but i did order some pasta, sauce, can veggies, rice and toilet paper. I only ordered about 3 of each and one of the toilet paper because we are actually done to out last roll. I would normally just go do a target or costco run but i am avoiding that at the moment.

to answer the thread title......NO. I have food in the house - and god forbid we get quarantined, I have neighbors who will drop sh*t off.

NYC now has a second confirmed case. This one is more serious than the first.

The first, a healthcare worker, herself, is mildly showing symptoms and was sent home, with drugs, for self-quarantine. Officials hope/think, like the regular flu, that her symptoms will resolve itself. (80% of the reported cases in China have been found to resolve itself.) Her husband is suspected he might too, have the Coronavirus, since he has been in close contact with her. He's being tested. And he too, is in self-quarantine with her.

The problem is, that before she was tested, she and her husband flew back on a flight from Iran, which is riddled with the Coronavirus. And that's how she got infected. Now, all the people onboard the plane with her have been informed. Along with their taxi/Uber driver from the airport. (No word if they have to self-quarantine or be tested.) :sad2: I wonder though, if her symptoms get much worse that she has to go to the hospital. How is she going to get there? How did she even get home for the self-quarantine? I hope not by other taxi/Uber drivers.

This second case, is an Orthodox Jewish lawyer. He has NOT had any contact with people who may be suspected of having the Coronavirus. So, this is the first known "community spread" infected person here. He's in the hospital with more serious symptoms. He, unfortunately, went to a funeral the other day and attended some other, well attended Orthodox Jewish community event later. His wife and two kids are now in self-quarantine for 2 weeks. And the 2 Jewish schools the kids attend, as well as a third, as they may have associated with kids from the latter school at one of the events above, are now closed as a precaution. :(

Or are the people just wanting to be prepared? I don't see anyone panicking on this thread. I see people trying to get prepared in case of supply disruptions, quarantines, etc.
I'm talking about the people at the stores that are wiping out entire shelves while people wait behind them, getting nothing. I'm not talking about the people on this thread.

The food can be stored in a relatively small space if you are willing to go freeze dried. Mountain House food actually tastes really good once reconstituted. In a true emergency it would taste great compared to nothing.

Here is a 14 day kit:
https://www.mountainhouse.com/m/product/0089607.html
There are a total of 80 servings in our 14-day kit, and it requires a total of 60 cups (15L) of water to rehydrate all the pouches. This emergency food kit weighs 14.6 lbs. and measures 19.75"(L) x 12.3"(W) x 15.3"(H).

You would need 7 of those....at $330 each.

But that cost comes with a 30 year shelf life.

Years ago we purchased enough #10 cans to feed our family for 14 days. It was cheaper that way then buying any of the kits. If it comes to it we will be eating the same meal over and over but we will be eating.

As for water we keep it in the basement and rotate it out. I buy two cases of water a week. Grab the oldest two cases from the basement and replace them with the newly purchased.

Who has that space???
You would be surprised where you can cram an extra couple cans of food or gallon of water. I've been watching some of the youtube preppers in small spaces - if there is a space under the couch, shove a couple cans. Under beds, on top of kitchen cupboards, corners of closets, even inside recliners. Kind of impressive! Some installed extra shelves if they had any empty wall space, put stuff under tables in the living room and added a table cloth so they couldn't be seen. Some might be able to get ideas - even if it's only for future storage.

I read that if you stock up on chicken broth you can use that to rehydrate food to help cut back on using water for that purpose. You could use up the broth first (however much you have, but wouldn't work if you had to bug out").

My DH said he was behind a lady at Smith’s today that had at least 20 boxes of cereal in her cart. He’s not sure if she was prepping or just an extreme couponer. I couldn’t get Prilosec at Target today but I had the same problem about a month and a half ago when there was the same deal.
