DH has informed me he is not to keen on the idea of the Disney cruise and in looking at our different options in the Concierge Collection, he mentioned he would like to try the Grove Park Inn. If anyone has stayed at this resort, I'd love to hear your comments and/or experiences. Thanks!

The Grove Park Inn is a delight. It's nestled in the Blue Ridge Mtns in Asheville and sits on a golf course.

The resort itself has a grand history and has a number of photos around depicting the major events of the area.

There is a wonderful "underground" grotto spa available to guests. They offer a full range of services.

There's a huge fireplace in the lobby that provides a nice gathering area. The restaurants are topnotch and offer a nice menu. Even in cool weather, there is outdoor seating available on the spacious deck since they have huge kerosene radiating heaters strategically placed around the dining area.

The Biltmore Estate is nearby for those looking for an activity during the day.

The lobby appears to be a little rustic (which added to it's charm for us), but the rooms are are contemporary and nicely appointed.

Enjoy!

We've looked into thsi before for a get away weekend trip to see Biltmore, but I've heard the spa prices at Grove Park Inn are out of thsi world!!!

I was looking at the website for this resort and it seems like it is very nice. I hope to be able to change hubby's mind about the cruise but if not, I don't think we can go wrong with this hotel.

Shan - In looking at the spa services on the website, I didn't think the prices were too out of line. Of course, I've never had a spa treatment but I wasn't shocked at the prices. My husband is interested in several of the gentlemen's treatments and they range from $60-$120 depending on what service you want.

DH is always so accommodating with my Disney trips that I am trying to do the same. If he wants a spa trip for our anniversary then I'm doing my best to be happy about it and do what planning ahead I can.

Thanks so much for the review! If anyone else has a comment, I'd love to hear it.

You'd want to note that the entire Grotto Spa area is only accessible to adults (age 18). Children may not even enter the area, past the Reception desk. This is lovely for adults, but if you have children with you during your stay and you and DH want time together at the Spa, you will need to plan for them.

To reach the Grotto Spa, you can walk along landscaped paths in the hillside, with views, in the warmer weather. Or you can take interior tunnel corridors, in the cooler weather. It's pretty outside in summer.

While you'll be in the area, check the schedule for the Biltmore Estate (only a 10 minute drive away from the Grove Park Inn) to see if there are special scheduled events during your visit. The gardens are really gorgeous in the spring & summer. There are many nice walking trails (after touring the mansion). Tour the winery (sample the wines). Some evenings, there are musical performances in this great setting, candlelight tours and lovely decorations during the holidays, and other special events, which may require advance planning (they often sell out).

The lobby of the GPI is "rustic" in a Wilderness Lodge sort of way. There's a high ceiling and a huge stone hearth fireplace, large enough to stand inside when the enormous logs are not lit. The crackling fireplace makes the lobby quite cozy and pleasant in the winter, with gorgeous views of the Asheville area plateau and mountains beyond.

If your trip will be during the Christmas holiday season, there's a giant Christmas tree in the lobby and everything looks very festive. Sometime during the first 2 weeks of December, they host a popular gingerbread village competition. Some folks travel a good distance to compete and/or view the results, which remain on display through the season.

During the warm weather months, a visit to Cherokee, 1 hour west, is nice, especially touring the Okonoluftee living museum. June brings out the rhododendruns along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Linville Falls and Grandfather Mountain are beautiful visits - 1.5 hours, winding, scenic drive up the BRP. The Folk Art Center (directly on the BRP) is only 10 minutes north of Asheville, with a terrific gallery of crafts on display and for sale.

Locally in Asheville, there are tons of restaurants, boutiques & shops for browsing. The Grove Park Inn has award-winning restaurants. If you want a fabulous, special dinner outside the Grove Park, try Gabrielle's at The Richmond Hill Inn - pricy but worth it for a special occasion. John Henry's on Haywood St. is popular for brunch. Try the specialty bakery items at the Old Europe Coffee House, near the Flat Iron Building on Battery Pk. The Hop Ice Cream shop offers good homemade ice cream on Merrimon Ave.

Many people enjoy browsing in the newly refurbished, historic Grove Arcade area downtown (near that bakery, above) or in the Biltmore Village (near B. Estate) or in the Mast General Store on Biltmore Ave. Guess that's enough stuff. ;) Have a fun stay, if you do decide to visit the Asheville area!

Grove Park Inn is THE expensive, upscale resort in Asheville. It is for people who like golf and pampering or are making a movie nearby. Most of the rooms have little plaques that say "so and so slept here." Authors, celebrities, etc. Last time we were there we saw a plaque that said "Mickey Mouse stayed here." Go figure.

The newer wings have nicer rooms but the main lodge has more historic rooms with names of older or deceased celebrities.

Eating on the Grove Park patio is one of life's great experiences.

I've not been to the spa, but if it's like the rest of the Grove Park I'm sure it's great. I don't golf so can't comment on the course. (I've been there for meetings. I live 90 miles away across the mountains.)

Asheville is an eclectic, artsy town. The downtown area is a new-age mecca full of lots of wierdness but worth seeing. Some excellent restaurants.

Lots of mountains nearby. Blue Ridge Parkway. Fall is the best time of year -- October, although the leaves have been turning a couple weeks later the past few years. Rhododendrons bloom mid Jue to mid July in most of this area. I'm sure the Inn could tell you if that's of interest. Biltmore has certain festivals and special events that you may want to check into before scheduling. They have amazingly good wines and you can go to their winery for tasting. I don't know how far Cherokee is from there -- they have casinos.

The local skiing is pitiful. Don't go in winter.
