I'd like to get my DD a sewing machine for Christmas. Last year I got her a small hand sewing kit and she has kept interest in it. She is 11 yrs old (a lefty if that matters at all). I do not want to buy her a kid machine. I am afraid that most of those are frustrating pieces of junk. I thought it might be better to get her a regular machine...but it has to be pretty basic. We could set it up in the dining room or den (we have to keep it away from the 2 yr old twins). I, obviously, will help her as needed (although, I am a beginner too). The thing is, with 5 kids, including twin toddlers, I need this machine to be something she can handle without me being right next to her all the time.

Any suggestions?

We are in the chicago area. Up here some Jo Anne Fabrics have Viking/Singer sewing stores in them. That may be a good place to start. Also consider a needle guard that attaches to the machine.

I got mine a few months ago over on overstock. They have refurbished machines that are a STEAL! I got mine shipped to my door for like $67

One thing to keep in mind.. If the sewing machine you choose doesn't weigh much, it will jump and wiggle all over the table while she's using it - unless it has rubber guards on the bottom or you place it on some type of rubber mat that will grip it..

I have two sewing machines.. One is very old and very heavy that I use for quilting.. Love it! Stays in place perfectly..

I also have a Brother - with the removable arm (so you could slide a pant leg on it or a sleeve).. It doesn't weigh much and if it's not on a rubber mat, within 2 minutes the machine has "walked" halfway across the table..:rotfl:
