Anyone refuse to go into Walmart? *Updated figures on Page 1*

I don't like parking at Walmart, I don't like shopping at Walmart, I don't like checking out at Walmart. I'll pay more, just keep me away from all those people::yes::

Must be the oddball here in northwest FL, but of the 4 walmarts I can choose to shop at....ALL of them are fine! One of them is dirtier than the others, but I'm not in that one often, so it doesn't even bother me. I've never had problems in line or with their customer service. The one right down the street from me is VERY clean and parking is NEVER a problem! :p

Interesting how it appears no one will shop at Wal-Mart, yet they are making billions of dollars every year. Either this group isn't reprentative of the nation as a whole, or we're spending a lot more in the aparantly rare visits than we think!;)

Shells9 and flrose, I've heard about the instances you're talking about, in Alabaster, AL, and I think down in Florida (around Bradenton or in that general area??).

Actually it is in Fort Myers, near the Page Field airport.

Thanks, Shells. I knew it was somewhere south of Tampa.

Another thing that puzzles me about WalMart. Usually when I shop at one, it's only to get a handful of items -- maybe toothpaste or the newest release DVD, but generally just things I can carry without a buggy or a hand basket -- and I want to get in and out fast.

Yet their "express lines" are for up to 20 items!?!?!?! Yeah, I know, it's a subtle way to encourage people to buy more stuff. Thankfully a few have the self check-outs, but not many.

I love my Super Wallmart! It's huge, new clean and the prices absolutely can't be beat!

Updated Info and Tidbits

Walmart sold 64 million books in 2002, or 4% of the 1.6 Billion books sold in the United States. The relatively low percentage belies the chain's influence: A typical Barnes & Noble stocks at least 60,000 titles, while most Walmart stores carry just 500.

Video Sales in the US topped 12.2 billion in 2002. Walmart's share of that was 21%, but the percentage of units it moved was higher - about 24% of the 833 million movies sold nationwide - because of Walmart's cut-rate pricing. Thats nearly 1 in every 4 movies sold in the US.

Walmart sold 20% or the 649.5 million CDs and musical Albums that Americans bought in 2002.

Walmart began selling groceries in 1988 and is now the largest grocer in the Us with the annual revenue of more than $72 Billion and a market share approaching 15%.

Walmart has become the biggest civilian employer on the planet, with more people on it's payroll than GM, ExxonMobil, Ford, and General Electric combined!

It's sales in 2002 nearly surpassed the gross national product of Russia.

It holds many store employees to a 28 hour work week so it doesn't have to pay benefits that by law go to full time workers.

More than 3 dozen employee law suits allege that it insists on unpaid overtime.

It's full coverage health insurance is so expensive that only about a third of it's employees buy in.

It's the target of a class action lawsuit brought by women - led by a former Miss America - who charge sex discrimination in wages and promotions.

And those are exactly the reasons I refuse to shop there!

I don't shop at the Wal-Mart here because it is nasty and dirty, but that's the only reason.

As for the outrage over the life insurance policy, why should anyone care whether or not a company insures it's assets? That's what employees are to a company, assets. There is nothing illegal or unethical about a company doing this, so I'm failing to see what the big deal is.

And if people aren't shopping at Wal-Mart because of this, perhaps those same people should be prepared to give up their Disney habit as well, because Disney did the same thing.

I shop at Walmart all the time, the prices are great. I don't understand what screaming kids and parents spanking them has to do with Walmart, I have seen this in many stores. I don't think Walmart has much control over how people treat their children.

Perhaps we should look into the business practices of all the major corporations. There is not ONE innocent major corporation, I guarantee it. You will find problems with them all.

I admit I shop at Wal-Mart. We have a beautiful Supercenter. I never have a problem with parking (ummm how hard is it to walk for those who don't have any physical disabilities?). Checkouts always go smoothly. My Wal-Mart has a policy of all checkout lanes open during certain times of the day (the BUSY times). Now there are two other Wal-Mart Supercenters near me that I refuse to shop at for many reasons.

But again, I must say, Wal-Mart is NOT the only corporation with these business practices.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I thought Target was based in Minniapolis. Could you tell me which European Corp owns Target? Thanks!

Tracy
I stand corrected. Tracy is correct. Target is a Minn corp.

Makes me feel better about shopping at Target. We have a great Target near us - nice, big, clean, well-stocked. We have two Walmarts in town - one is dirty & disgusting - some of the employees are :scared1: - The other Walmart is newer, cleaner, bigger & better organized - but on the other side of town, in a direction I never go.

I agree Wal-Mart is the only company with bad busniness practices. I have worked for many companies that worst then Wal-mart they is major corparations. Some people need take the blinders off because Wal-Mart is not only bad company out there.

I can't stand our Target. The parking is awful.

Wal-Mart is bring badly need jobs to our area that has been desert for years. Guess what they is protesting it because talking it hurting the enironment. They is crazy if they had a golf course on there then can have a Wal-mart. I hope Wal-mart win there lawsuit because they s bring 500 jobs to the area.

There is alot of stores is dirty. Wal-mart is not only one. Give example TJ Maxx is a filthy store here. Another example Wal-mart is not only ones that treat thre employees bad. Try HomeGoods on for size.

Don't Shop on Saturday the store is always dirty and disorgazied.

And those updated figures are exactly why I refuse to step into a Walmart or Sam's Club. Their labor practices are horrendous. I'd rather pay more for a product knowing the store employees actually got something out of it, when they don't at Walmart.

We go to Wal-mart strictly for the entertainment value:teeth: .

We make a game out of it....who can spot the most "mullet's", or the most crying babies in one shopping cart or which lady has the most curlers in her hair. Friday nights or Saturday mornings are the prime time for seeing "the sights". Real life is so much more entertaining than anthing you'd see on tv.

For you King of the Hill fans...how about hank's opinion of the "Super Mega-Lo Mart"? funny stuff

I agree with that, Friday nights are great times to visit Walmart if your bored and looking for a laugh. Some people are amazing at what they wear or do in public.

I hate hate hate hate hate Wal-Mart. I try to stay out of it, but every once in awhile I will venture inside to get something. I actually bought my daughter's bday cake there. I was worried that I was going to get it, because when I ordered it, the bakery guy acted like I was wasting his time to write down my name and what kind of cake I wanted.

The closest Wal-Mart to us is the biggest money making Wal-Mart in the US....the one on John Young/Sand Lake Road. It's hideous. The store is ALWAYS filthy, there are ALWAYS screaming people inside, and the employees are NEVER EVER helpful! The toy section looks like a bomb went off, the food section is never stocked very well, and the clothing section looks like the bottom of someone's messy closet. I'm so surprised that this is the #1 money making Wal-Mart because it just never appears to be stocked or clean, but I guess they must do it at some point of time.

I shop for basics at Wal-Mart simply because it saves me money. I prefer Target but their grocery items are a bit too limited. Luckily, we have a nice Wal-Mart close to us.

OMG!! I wanted to post something just like this! The closest Wal*Mart to me is in a very nice, upper middle class suburb. Yet, everyone either has a mullet, a few missing teeth (or dead ones), or some other back wood identifier.

I once asked a WalMart manager why they built 20 cash lanes if he could only hire 2 cashiers!

There is a WalMart close to me that is GROSS! There is another one further away that is nicer, but.... I really like Target. (Nothing polictical just nicer stores!)

If you are really polically motivated I would assume you would only shop small local merchants. It does not look to me like Target is paying that much better and I don't think those cashiers are union either!
