Anyone read a good book lately?

I'm leaving for a mini 4 night vacation on Thursday with my mom and aunt (no... not Disney this time!) and one of the things I'm so excited for is to be able to get some reading in! No kids, no hubby... you get the idea. I just want to relax.

Anyways, would anyone care to recommend a book? I think I'm going to head to Barnes and Noble this afternoon. Nothing too Danielle Steel-ish, though I don't want anything too heavy or involved either. :confused3

Thanks!

I'm reading a fabulous book right now called "Year of Wonder" by Geraldine Brooks. It's short and very well written about a small village during the plague.

I also recomment Tracey Chevalier's The Virgin Blue.

I just finished "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. It was fantastic - I really loved it. It's a wonderful story about a couple, very much in love, coping with the husband's genetic disorder which causes him to travel in time. He's able to travel back and meet his future wife when she was a child, as well as travel into the future of their relationship. Not too science-fictiony, even with the time travel aspect, and just a great, great story.

Recently read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon... it was fantastic!

My dh just finished reading the new Patterson book Honeymoon and the new Grisham book The Broker. He enjoyed both.

Our book club is reading My Jim by Nancy Rawles this month.

Oh, I loved "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time", too!!! And my favorite from last year was Se Monk Kidd's "The Secret Life of Bees." Just a fabulous story, and her new novel "The Mermaid Chair" will be released in April.

A third vote for "A Curious Incident with the Dog in the Night Time" ... very agile, clever, vivid book.

Recently, I've also really liked:
"Conviction" (Richard North Patterson)
"Death in Vienna" (Daniel Silva - he's got a bunch of good books)
"Persuader" (Lee Child)
"Cosmopolitan" (Toby Cecchini)
"Mountains Beyond Mountains" (Tracy Kidder)
"The Great Fire" (Shirley Hazzard)

and my all-time favorite book
"Everything Is Illuminated" (Jonathan Safran Foer) - this is coming out as a movie in August, starring Elijah Wood (aka Frodo). Foer has another book coming out later this month, "Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close" - there's a LOT of publishing buzz around it ... plus an article about it in last week's Time Magazine. Just try this book out, two chapters. See what you think.

I would recommend Angry Housewifes Eating Bon-Bons if you have not already read it. Great book! :)

I am more than half way through Disney War by James Stewart. I know you said that you didn't want anything heavy and this isn't. It reads like a good soap opera.....An ABC soap opera! :)

Here are a few other ones I enjoyed:

Watermelon - Marion Keyes (anything by her is good)
Good in Bed - Jennifer Weiner (also In Her Shoes by her is good)
Another vote for Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons (sort of like ya yas)
I don't know how she does it - can't think of the author

Of course anything Harry Potter ;)

Our Book Club just finished "My Sisters Keeper" by Jodie Picoult. It is one of the best books I have ever read. For the first time ever - our entire book club LOVED the book. We have been meeting monthly for 7 years so this was a real feat.

I am glad to hear that. I just got this book and have not had a chance to sit down and read it.

Oh don't get me wrong - I like her books! I've read a bunch of them, but I tend to go through phases where I only read 1 author (did it with Steven King, did it with DS, did it with the Harry Potter books) and I'm looking for a new style of writing :teeth:

And thanks for all the recommendations everyone! I knew I could come here for advice... :grouphug:

"A Salty Piece of Land" by Jimmy Buffett.

But it will be a bit confusing at time if you have not read "Where is Joe Merchant" first.

Oh and I meant to tell you guys, I read some Sidney Sheldon recently ... and it made me sad that I missed the 1970s! That book was awesome, and the clothes and society he describes, fantastic!

"Summer Sisters" by Judy Blume (sp?) and "The Eight" by Katherine Neville

Good luck....let us know what you choose

Currently reading "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom

Great read.

I'm reading "French Women Don't Get Fat" -- the newest "diet" book; "Sharing Good Times" -- Jimmy Carter's memoirs of life when he was a boy and a young man; and "Running in Heels" by Anna Maxted -- a funny, light read.
