Is this really needed? We have a 5 night booked and im sure like alot of places they have time periods that you lose a certain amount of money and in the last 15 days to arrival you forfeit whole balance. For our 5 nights its around $790. We arent flying but driving to orlando.
Has anyone gotten travel insurance when booking a condo? Do you recommend doing this?

We usually do but we go for 10 days to two weeks so the amount is more. I use insuremytrip.com for cancellation insurance for the house rental. Read the policy to see what it covers.

I looked into this and it was $100 for staying 7 nights. That seems like a lot. Are there better rates or should I skip it?

Wow, that seems high. We use the same company and it worked out to less than $90. That included flights (~$1600 total) and $900 for a villa rental. The kids were free. The only reason why we get the trip insurance is because we live in Maine and travel to Florida over school vacation week in the middle of February. If a snow storm hits Maine the weekend that we travel, we will not get out of here until midweek at the earliest. I teach school and can't alter my travel days, so we would not be able to go at all if that happened to us. Because we are pretty healthy and have every intention of going on our trips, we wouldn't bother with the insurance if we were traveling during the late spring, summer, or fall, unless we had a sick parent or relative. When we rent a villa at the beach in the summer, they have the same or stricter cancellation policy and we have never gotten trip insurance. It's a gamble we are willing to take. You just need to think of scenarios that would prevent you from traveling and decide if it is worth the gamble.

I usually self-insure. In the long run, it's been less expensive, even with losing a few nights here and there due to travel delays, buying clothes to hold me over while luggage was mis-routed etc. And, I normally travel in late February, where weather can be a problem in my home airport.

But, if I lost an entire vacation's worth of non-refundable costs (airfare, lodging) it would not keep me from rescheduling later in the same year. I wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't be unable to go later either. If you don't have that flexibility, insurance is probably a good idea, just in case.

Im not flying but driving from NJ but still wondering if i should purchase it or not as i think i still have about a week to do so. We always follow through with our vacations but i do have a 5 year old with diabetes and have had two hospitalizations about 2 years ago due to stomach bug but nothing has happened within the last 2 years but still it is always in the back of my mind. Do i put out the $100 or less or gamble away the $800 possibly a bit more if we decide to stay one extra night. Also isnt the end of August usually the hurricane season?
Anyone have an opinion on this????

I'm wondering about this too...considering renting a condo at the tail end of our WDW trip in September but can't get past the 15 day cancellation clause. Hurricane's don't start 15 days prior to hitting Florida. I guess I'll look into travel insurance for that portion of the trip but I doubt it's feasible for a 3 night beach front stay.???????????? I'll be watching this post.
