Anyone own the monorail set?

I am not sure if this is the proper folder to post this in (feel free to move it if necessary).

When we last visited Disney World in December 2007, my son (now 6) was begging for the monorail set. We told him it was simply too big to bring home (he did not know that we could have had it shipped). We are headed to the World again next month and I can feel it coming..."please, can I have the monorail set". He would be content to ride the monorail all day and is also a huge fan of trains, trolleys, etc.

Can anyone provide feedback on the set? Is it worth the price? Is it sturdy? (I also have a 3 year old son that I am sure will be interested in it, too.) Is it something that is actually played with or not.

Thanks in advance! I just want to be prepared this go around.

We purchased this set for Christmas 2000 and still have it. We called and had it shipped to our house after our kids first trip to WDW in 2000. Our kids were also train fanatics. When they were toddlers, they had lots of Thomas the tank stuff. As they outgrew that, they still played with the monorail. They used to set it up in their room and use a castle piggy bank and find a ball for Epcot, etc. They played with it a lot and it held up to the rigors of 3 boys who used to use the track pieces as swords at times. We still have it, but it's rarely played with now that the older boys are 13 and 11. Our youngest was never into trains like the older ones. However, this past Christmas they did get it out to play with again when we had lots of family over.

NOTE: We had the older version that the cars didn't open up. I don't know if they sell that version or not. When we were there last time, we saw a version that the cars opened up and it had miniature figurines that came with it.

My family and I purchased it back in December 2001 and we packed it in our checked bags, so we were able to make room for it.

my at the time 6 year old bought the set with his own money was so excited to get it and played with it for maybe a month or 2. then the pieces were strewn all over the place, his 2 year old sister got a hold of the pieces and the mini characters that came with it can come apart into 2 different pieces (as if they were not small enough already).many got sucked in the vacuum.
it was tossed within the year unfortunately. i would not recommend it for a child imo. teenager or adult collector yes- but in my experience- i wish he would have spent his vacation $ on something else.

if you do decide to get it- you can always toss the characters aside- but it is very large and need to be played with on the floor as a Thomas the Tank engine table is not even large enough for it.hth

My DH loves the monorails (used to build train sets in his youth). He and my DS bought their first monorail in 2000. We have since bought every new color that comes out. We have also bought the accesories that go with including the GF, Poly, Contemporary, TTC and more. We currently set them up around our Christmas tree and have since 2000. They are taken down the rest of the year. At some point we may set them up permanently but haven't yet. Kids were 4 and 6 when we bought the first one. We also have a dog and 2 cats. So far everything works perfectly

The monorail and 14 feet of track is US$75 + tax. It holds up well, but is quite large, and sometimes difficult to find a place for. If you want the optional Contemporary resort (If it has not been discontinued) is US$40 + tax.

I think the monorail set was close to $70. The castle playset is around $60 I think. Santa brought the castle playset to my DD in 03 and she still has it. DS got the train set from Santa in 03 and he still has that. They have been getting the castle down and setting up the train along with the Tree of Life that they bought on our last trip. The castle and the Tree of Life come with little figures. They have a blast playing WDW in the middle of the living room. WDW is usually set up for several days. (Until mom finally has a breakdown and makes them clean it up.)

We have the blue set (purchased in 2006). I did finally use super glue on the doors because DS was constantly knocking the doors off. Seriously, you could walk by the thing and a door would fall off. But, I left the tops alone, so he can still open the tops and play with the characters.

We only put ours up at Christmas, around the tree. Our tree is pretty much a Disney tree (plus any ornaments the kids have made or have been given to the kids as gifts). But doing this also keeps the monorail exciting since it's only up for a month each year.

I set it up around the Christmas tree...IMHO it is a great toy and actually pretty cool with all its working parts

We got one in feb 09. It was around $40 (all toys were 35%off). This was just for the monorail and oval track.

Our Monorail Set is an older one. My parents handed it down to my DD (then 6) - at Christmas (2007) time - along with the Contempory and Epcot Ball . She loves it. It only comes out for about 2 months (around Christmas). When we go to WDW in May we hope to get a building.

For Christmas 2007, DH and I bought the Castle playset (shipped from WDW). This currently stays out all year. After Christmas 2009, it will also get changed to a holiday toy.



We use this instead of trains around the tree.

Robo, that is so awesome, DW is so jealous right now after watching that.

We also have the monorail playset which we bought in November 2007. We also only put it up at Christmas under the tree as ours is also pretty much a Disney Christmas tree with Disney Ornaments and such. The playset is a really cute playset though.

Then again thanks to DW, our whole house is a Disney house, with Disney in every room, yes even the bathrooms.

You can count us in with the group that sets up our monorail at Christmas. Ours goes under the tree along with the models of Spaceship Earth, the Grand Floridian, the Contemporary, and the Polynesian. Doesn't leave a lot of space under the tree, but that's the way the kids like it, so we don't argue with it.

We have the Monorail set and SpaceShip Earth. (had them shipped home on our last trip)They are cool... but nothing close to Robo's set-up. Incidently Robo- your parade music is the ringtone on my phone.
