Hi,

What's your opinion on trampolines? My kids have been begging for one for over a year. My husband is keen to get one, but I am hesitant. Even though they are now made with enclosures, I'm sure that bones can still get broken. Lots of the kids friends have one and I've been told by co-workers that I need to "lighten up".
I'm so on the fence with this one.:rolleyes1
Opinions please :goodvibes

My daughter has had a trampoline for years and loves it. A child can break a bone almost anywhere. My boys had 3 and 4 wheelers and were never hurt. If they're careful, they should be ok but accidents happen. I've never been a "bubble wrap" parent. As much as I would hate for my child to get hurt,l I feel that kids need to have fun, including a trampoline, gymnastics, dodge ball, and tag, etc.

too bad youre so far away- i would give you mine. they are fun to have but watch out- some home owners insurance dont allow them....my dh is making us give it away because we just switched home insurance and they said they wont cover any accidents on it..my kids are all oder now anyway-theyare never home to use it..lol.

I have 4 kids DS4, DD6, DS12 & DD14. All of them love the trampoline. We just got it this summer. They are on it all the time. We have the enclosure. I've even been known to jump a little. We love ours and so far no injuries.

Thanks for the replies! I hadn't thought of our house insurance, guess I'd better look into that first.
I think I'm a little more hesitant with their friends on it then themselves. I guess I would just tell their parents that we have one and leave it up to them to decide if they want their child on it.

We've had two of them. They both ended up wrapped around a tree during a storm. The second one was actually my nephews that got moved to our house because when my DB & DSIL changed insurance companies they couldn't have it. Well, shortly before the second one got wrapped around the tree my nephew jumped off of it and broke his arm. DD broke her elbow on the first one several years ago. We won't be replacing it.

My mom had one at her house, and it was a blast! Nobody ever got hurt on it, although my niece and my brother both flew off it at one time (she landed in some ivy, and my brother landed on me!). I would say get a trampoline with an enclosure so you don't have to worry so much about falling.

I keep telling DH that we need to get one when we get a house, but he keeps telling me I'll break my neck. They really are a lot of fun though.

We have one too ! We set it in the ground. The kids (now teens) love it, and I have to admit mom and dad have had fun on it too. It's great exercise! We've never had any accidents on it.....and there were times when they were smaller that 7 or 8 kids would be on there at once!

Think about digging a hole for it. We think it's much safer, and when they were small, it was much easier for them to just walk onto it, instead of climbing up into one that is above ground.

We have one and love it. We´ve had it for 15 months and the kids never get enough of it. It´s been used a lot. I know it´s dangerous but I also know there are certain precautions that can be taken to minimalize the risk.

"Anyone own a trampoline?"

my parents
- no safety net
- no rules using it that I recall besides using common sense (abandoned at times)
- many people of widely varying ages have used it over the years with, to my knowledge, no accidents causing injury (an 18 year old high school football player did bounce off it and hit the ground rolling, but was not hurt)

a friend's parents
- no net, no rules (to my knowledge)
- a friend (19 years old at the time) sprained his ankle

"What's your opinion on trampolines?"

- i love them, and really enjoyed having one available at home
- do you have any trees large enough to hold a trampoline? are your children's friends the types who would stick a trampoline up in a tree? it is interesting trying to get a trampoline out of a tree

"Opinions please"

- one might say they help clean out the gene pool (search for "trampoline accident" on YouTube)
- life is lethal & i figure a trampoline ain't the worst way one could go (YMMV)

I would like to say again, check with your homeowners insurance. Many companies will drop you if they find out you have one.

Oh boy, have you just opened a can of worms! :rotfl2:

Our home owners insurance doesn't allow them. Our friends parents have one. They have 7 grandkids and all of them at one time or another have been injured on it. My DS sprained his knee on it. It wasn't very major but did result in an ER visit. It doesn't have an enclosure.

I ALMOST caved in and bought one for my daughter but I first wanted to talk to my homeowners insurance company and they said NO WAY-if they find out you have one they drop you and they will NOT cover any accidents that happen on a trampoline. Many of her friends have them, 2 had broken legs last year and the one that really freaked me out was one of the boys was jumping on one withthe saftey net and as he came down he was close to the net, his teeth got hooked in the net as he fell and it ripped out his top 4 permanent teeth-it was a MESS. My neighbors daughter went UNDER the trampoline while her siblings were jumping on it and she ended up with a concussion and broken arm. I am glad I did not cave in and buy one.

i was 17 when i got mine so i didnt need a safety net but i'd invest in one if your kids are young...or dare devils.

we have had one for 2/3 years, and no injuries.
If I were you I would put it in a corner of your garden with lots of soft plants and bushes, or perhaps the safety net (but we dont have one)
Its a good way to get excercise and still have fun.

We have had two. The second one went with Katrina and we haven't replaced it. When my sons were younger they loved it, but were daredevils. They never got really hurt, just a few bumps and bruises, but I do know kids that have been seriously hurt on one. Most of the injuries have come from there being several kids on the trampoline at once and hitting each other, not from falling off. At that time the pre-teen boys around here seemed to mostly like using the thing for a wrestling ring! My daughter loved it too (she's quite a bit younger than her brothers) but she was more careful and liked playing on it by herself or with just one other girl. I don't think they are any more dangerous than a lot of other things kids have, but just like anything else, you do have to have ground rules.

We don't have one, but driving around in our area one would think we lived in the trampoline capital of NJ. For awhile I thought they were mandatory with a purchase of a house. ;) They are everywhere, but most of the ones I've seen have a netted enclosure. My kids have been in a few (invited, of course)- no injuries yet! Not sure whether to buy one? Go with your gut feeling!
