I have always wanted to make my own Spritz cookies for the holidays, but never get around to it. My dad has one of the OLD cookie presses where you screw the dough down, my sister has an electric one. Which one is better and where do I find them?

Also, does it come with a spritz cookie recipe inside?

Get the electric! I have my mom's old press and it can be a workout!

Edit: Mine is ancient - all metal and you actually have to press the dough out. The new manual ones that have a trigger are easier - might actually be better that an electric so you don't have to mess with a cord.

I received a Pampered Chef cookie press as a wedding gift. Although I've never used it. I don't even know how it works.

I just bought one last weekend at Linen's & Things. It's not electric and only cost about $7 with a rebate.

It's one of those things I've always wanted but just never bothered to purchase. I'm going to try it out for Christmas cookies. I hope it's not too difficult--it didn't come with directions but I've figured out how it all goes together.

I have one of the Pampered Chef ones-- manual. I use it a couple of times a year. It took a few times to get the hang of it but I like mine.

I have an old 'manual' one. It has always been fine as long as the cookie dough is kept chilled. It comes with the recipes. The cookies are fantastic when you use real butter!! I don't find it any harder to use than rolling cookie dough out and cutting shapes.

I also have the Pampered Chef Cookie Press and use it during the holidays. I have to agree with keeping the dough well chilled, once it starts to warm the dough tends to get sticky.

Most presses do come with recipes and you may have to experiment a bit to find one that tastes good and is easy to work with.

Happy Baking!! :wave2:

I have the Pampered Chef one too, the one that looks like a caulk gun. I really like it. My favorite use is for deviled eggs, just put the yolk (yoke)? mixture in there; it looks like a pro did the eggs.

I'm another one who has the Pampered Chef one. I LOVE IT! It comes with a bunch of different cookie designs to make. I use it every year and make the original spritz, peanut butter spritz cookies and I just found a recipe for gingerbread spritz.

The key is to keep the dough chilled in the fridge. Works much better.

Go and get one and enjoy! My girls love putting the sprinkles on :goodvibes

My very old electric gave out. The new electrics are battery powered and don't work as well. I bought several presses - all fairly expensive - all of which don't work well - and then I bought one with the Martha Stewart name at K-Mart for less than $10 and it works great. Go figure.

I have a newer one (?electric) that I can't figure out how to use :rotfl:

I prefer my old manual one. Yummm.. Butter cookies. Maybe I'll pull it out this weekend and make some. Those cookies are the best!

I have always wondered about these. I might just have to purchase on and give it a try.

Everyone I have seen comes with recipes and there are also recipes in cookbooks. Use butter - not margarine. Makes all the difference.

I hope yours turn out better than my mom's did. They never really tasted very good.

I use mine every year...my family considers them a real treat.

I have a Wilton brand press. It is not electric and it is not a crank kind either. you just pull the handle and it clicks a cookie onto your pan...very, very easy.

I use my manual press once a year. The secret, other that using a recipe for pressed cookies, is to press until the dough rests on the pan, then lift. When the dough hits the pan it sticks and causes the dough to separate from the press so the next cookie can be pressed out. My opinion is that the manual ones are so easy, and if you are only going to be doing a couple batches a year, the expense of an electric press isn't worth it. Besides, there is more to go wrong with an electric press.

Would you be willing to share the gingerbread recipe????

Here's my grandmothers recipe. I make them every year. I use food coloring to make them green then choose the Christmas tree shape for my cookie press. Then I sprinkle with little colored balls - looks like a decorated tree.

1 cup softened butter
1/2 cup sugar
Beat well
add:
2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 tsp. almond extract

Bake 400 6-9 min.

I have a battery powered one and an electric one - love them! It's my favorite holiday cookie. :) I use Mom's recipe or the one in my Cookie Book.
