If you were ever on the receiving end of a meal train, what was your favorite meal that you received? Was there anything you did NOT like?

Someone I know is facing a hardship and we are doing a meal train for them for two months.

Thanks!!!

I don't even know the ins and outs of a meal train. But since I'm using my best guess here, and my brain ;), I just wanted to say God bless you. And thank you for making my day with your post. :thumbsup2

When my mother died, we were fed dinner by very kind people for about three weeks. Almost every person made lasagna.

My favorite was the seafood lasagna that had a white sauce. It was VERY good and a nice change from all the other lasagnas. We did appreciate bit having to cook during that time.

Maybe I should do something non pasta. Roasted chicken maybe?

My sister makes a chicken enchilada that is supposed to be fantastic even when frozen. She made a couple of pans of it for my other sister when she was going through chemo.

I'll ask her for the recipe and post it here.

My advice is to keep it simple. Like the previous poster just said, lots of people will make lasagna or something similar. After a few days, all you want is "normal" food, like roast chicken, potatoes and a vegetable.

When my mother died recently, we were inundated with ham, sandwiches, KFC, more chicken, lunch meat & cheese, all types of rolls. We were thankful. But when someone sent over a cut up fruit platter, we were really grateful.

Wow, thank you!

Thank you for all the advice!

I wonder what it's like to get dinner brought to you every single night. Wow. When I had my first child my mom sent me flowers and a box of candy and that is what my husband ate for dinner two nights - that box of Russel Stover candy! LOL! We were so sleep deprived we had no desire to cook or shop so that candy tasted awesome. :)

Don't forget breakfast. Dd was born dec 17. Sil gave us a pumpkin bread. It was delicious and I ate that for breakfast and many snacks that week.

What about meals in a zip lock bag that can be dumped into a crockpot like fajitas, stew, chili, chicken and vegetables
Soup if it's getting cooler where you are..

Paper plates, bowls and cups...

None of these are "lasagna" meals and I'm sure would be greatly appreciated.

Soup
Homemade Mac & Cheese
Stuffed Shells
Chicken Pot Pie
Ham & Scalloped Potatoes
Rotisserie Chicken, Potato salad, Rolls
Tacos
Breakfast Casserole
Bagels/Donuts/Juices
Fresh Fruit/Veggies
Cook up some french toast/pancakes & freeze (they will just heat & eat)
Pulled Pork/Cole Slaw/Buns
Shepards Pie
Meatloaf, Mashed Potatoes, Veggies
Chicken Divan (broccoli & cheese)
Homemade hamburgers with all the fixins

Don't forget dessert!!!
Paper goods are always helpful too (plates, cups, bowls, utensils)

When my (then) 1 year old was in an accident, we were fed for 3 full months by the people in my moms group, our church, and our neighbors! We did get a lot of lasagna, scalloped potatoes and ham, and tuna casserole. The most memorable one for me was the lady who called the day before she was supposed to come and asked me if I had a crockpot. I told her yes, and the next morning she came at 10am, brought sandwich makings and chips for lunch for me and my 1 and 3 year olds (and stayed to eat with us and talk). While she was there, she put a roast in the crockpot, left a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and also left all of the groceries we needed for a spaghetti dinner if we had a night when no one brought anything. None of those were particularly "special" items, but the thoughtfulness of it was completely unforgettable!

go to mealtrain.com and set up a calendar for people to sign up for meals. Our church has used this numerous time. It helps coordinate the meals

I had meals brought to me when I had my knee replaced and my favorite was a pot roast with potatoes and carrots. I took a meal to DDs youth leader when they had a baby and she said it was her favorite meal. It was the chicken with potatoes and green beans that has been all over facebook.

Before my friend passed away, we did a meal chain. Her sister gave us ideas of what to make. I also made some taco meat and put it in freezer bags and brough that over along with taco shells etc. for night s when the older boys were home alone.

Thanks! How do I find that chicken on Facebook?

Home made chicken pot pie. Delish

Also, a nice deli tray is a good idea. Sometimes you want something light.

Once I did a meal for a friend who's dad passed away and I did all kinds of deli meats & cheese, pickles, olives, potato chips, and rolls. I also cut up a fresh pineapple and sent that along with it. She said it was a great idea and if someone stopped by to visit, there was plenty that she could pull it out and make sandwiches.

After a while you get casserole over-load!

My go to meal is usually BBQ meatballs with a side of mashed potatoes and corn. I usually will do a box of ice cream too.
