We have ressies to visit WDW the last week of October. My mother is worrying herself sick about all the newscasts pertaining to possible terrorists attacks that could disrupt the Presidential elections. I'm trying to decide whether or not to go as planned or change the ressies. I realize we need to try and lead normal lives or the terrorists have already won but has anyone dealt with the wrath of their mother. :scared1:

Anyone else rethinking their travel plans in Oct./Nov.?

We aren't worried in the least. Try not to let that stuff bother us or it will drive you nuts. We always travel around the end of October or beginning of November. In fact, we traveled right after 9/11 attack. We went to Maui in October of 2001 and had a blast! I could tell the difference in the amount of travelers due to 9/11. But your right, if we don't lead our normal lives, then we are buying into the terrorists. This is exactly what they would want. I say just go to the WDW and have fun!!! Don't let the news/media and terrorists threats interrupt your life!

I also forgot to mention that this may probably be the safest time to travel in the fall with all the hype about terrorist threats around election time you know the airports will have strict or more heightened security. :yo-yo:

My dad sounds like your mother. He worries about everything. I think it's not only an age thing, but also shows parent worry about their kids even when they are 72 and the kid is 42. (in my case) :D I would go and have a good time. Tell your mom you will call her every day or every other day to check in . Once you arrive in WDW, you will be so caught up in the magic, you will forget about the "real world."

:scared1: I SAID I wasn't going to open this thread but I did. ;)
Our plans are not for WDW....but we are traveling to Colorado. DH hunts every other year with my DB and BIL...I have never accompanied him because of DD being in school...but this year she will be away at college! so...I plan to go with him and visit with my DS and SIL in the 'burbs of Denver while the men are out of town doing their thing.

DH and DS are leaving 10/27, I am waiting until 10/30. DS has to come back 11/4...(yes..Election Day  ) DH and I come back 11/6. So I'm traveling alone on 10/30, which I'm a little nervous about anyway.

We got unbelievably low airfares, just booked last week as a matter of fact. I've had people tell me they can't believe I'm flying then. I'm not afraid of what would happen as far as the air travel goes, as much as I am nervous about some other type of terrorism that would cause problems en route or delay our return home.

I don't have the wrath of my mother to deal with, but my own nerves...and those of DD who will be in the midst of adustment to freshman year in college...

But the trip is definitely on.

NHAnn: I share the same concerns as you. We would be travelling from WA to FL -- we can't get much farther away from home than that. I am more worried about security at high-profile places (like WDW). But on the other hand, our intelligence sources would probably be more alert and ready to respond if anything did happen during the election time frame (isn't Tues. 11/02 election day?). We may just flip a coin: heads, we go...tails, we don't.

We're traveling to WDW in October and New York City the first of November. I can honestly say that it never even crossed my mind. I guess I'm just not a worrier.

We're not worried about it, but it's just one more thing for my mother to worry about. She hates flying and worries every time we fly anywhere.

DH and I are flying to visit my parents over Halloween weekend. Returning home the day before the election. Never even gave it a thought until I read this thread. I'm not concerned in the least. And neither of my parents (ages 74 & 81) have voiced any concern about it.

But then I flew to WDW for a solo trip Nov 2001 as scheduled. And then my parents and I flew with a then-4-yr-old relative to WDW in Dec 2001 with the blessings of his parents who never even considered keeping their son from going.

I'm not about to let the threat of terrorism interfere with any of my travel plans. Or any other plans for that matter.

I expect to be on the road quite a bit before, during and after the elections. Not worried at all.

We don't have any travel plans during that time but I do have to say that I was listening to our public radio station about a week or so ago and they were talking about the security they will have at the democratic convention in Boston. OH MY GOODNESS:earseek: that right there was enough to freek anyone out. They are especially worried about a chemical attack, nerve gas to be specific. They were telling people to watch the weather fronts to know which direction the wind will be blowing etc etc.

I don't obsess over this but it is scary when you hear complete details like I did.

i flew on 7/4 this year, and i'll admit i was a bit worried about it. if i had been the one making the travel plans, i would not have flown that day. and when i say worried, i don't mean worried that my plane would be hijacked or anyhing like that. i mean worried that if something happened we would have been stranded in a foreign country with no way to get home until they let us fly again.

if i already had the trip booked/planned, i would still go. if i was thinking about going then, i probably would plan it for a different time.

i do some work in homeland security research. one of the guys i work with is ex military and was in the military for like 20 years. he doesn't ever fly on major holidays, even before 9/11. he is not the worrying kind either. that was enough to make me stop and think.

We're traveling on election day, flying home from WDW. Perhaps I should add another day or two to our vacation, just to be on the safe side. Yeah, that argument will work with DH. ;)

Edited to say that this argument DID work with DH and we extended our vacation by a day. I convinced him that security would be so heavy on election day that we would have to be at MCO really early and not be able to go to the parks.

My first trip to WDW in 10 years was scheduled for two weeks after the 9/11 attacks. Everyone was telling me that I shouldn't go because we didn't know where else they were going to hit. I told them all that I didn't care because if I was gonna die I wanted to die happy.

Thats like letting the terrorists win. They WANT you to be scared and not travel. They want you to be there little puppets. They are very happy that people are scared. Don't make them happy. Don't be scared... don't let them win.::MickeyMo

I hate to admit it...but I am scared to travel..It won't stop me from traveling but I hate the thought of us going. We are going to WDW in Aug and I keep thinking that WDW could be a target for terriorists.........stop a lot of people from traveling to tourist attractions...mess up airline travel again......I hate the fact that "they" got to me and made me scared but...I am.:( DH keeps telling me I am crazy but I can't help it. Nothing will keep me from our trip but I will have the thoughts in my head the whole time. Anyone else a Big Baby like me?? Am I all alone thinking these terrible things.........

No, D and Ls Mom, you're not alone! I feel the same way. I am a nervous wreck from the minute we start packing our bags. When we reach our destination I am distracted by other things but the thought never leaves my mind that we have to *always* be aware of our surroundings and anything that seems unusual. And, because I am a sucker for punishment, I had to read the "Terror In The Skies Again" threads. Stop the world...I want to get off !!!

We leave for WDW right after the elections..........but we are not flying.Hopefully WDW is not a place a terrorist will attack!
