Anyone love Florida so much after vacationing there they move to Florida?

You should think long and hard about moving after a vacation. What are the taxes like? What about jobs? Will you like not having snow at Christmas (if you had it before)? How are the schools? The politics? Are the people crazy? etc.

I like Florida, too. Not going to move there.

No. I lived there for 12 years. Nope nope nope nope nope. Never again.

That said, if YOU are so inclined, I would google Nocatee. Just south of Jacksonville, N. of St. Augustine. My mom lives there... it is amazing. The amenities are phenomenal and you can spend as little or as much as you like in any of the neighborhoods. Truly, if I HAD to live in Florida I would live there. Splash Waterpark is the community pool... and most of the neighborhoods all have their own regular pools as well... but wow. It is seriously amazing. My kids are down there now... vacationing at grandma's awesome pool.

We just moved to Orlando from MD. We left crazy high home prices, high taxes, and a seasonal job market. Did I mention the crime??

We moved to East Orlando where the schools are rated A+. The houses are massive and gorgeous for what you could have bought a condo for back home. The pay is similar to what we left, but the cost of everything is cheaper. It got quite irritating before we moved away when people would tell me that "not everything in Florida is Disneyworld". Yeah, thanks. I hadn't realized that...:rolleyes2: I come from a resort town - but one that would shut down every winter! We have been here a month and actually haven't even been to Disney. We have been all over the place discovering the rest of our area from the Gulf beaches to the clear spring water natural pools to the playgrounds (and splash pads!). I haven't been here long enough to tell you the bad side, but so far we are loving it. As a nurse, it was really easy for me to land a job before we came down. My husband is in tech support and is still looking.

We live upstate NY and the winters are long, cold and plenty of snow that keeps us indoors :( The warm weather doesn't last long and I'm still waiting for a nice hot summer day (compared to Florida heat its not hot here at all). We end up counting down the days to every visit we can make to Florida. Thanks for sharing your stories, I think its time to plan for that final visit to Florida and make it our home :)

Right on!

We're ready to move, too. My husband's applying for jobs, but I'm not sure how likely it is that he'd get hired, given that we're currently living out of state. We really don't have any experience with trying to secure a job in an area you're not currently living in.

So nice to hear all the replies. We're doing our best to get to Florida within 5 years. Yes the summer is hot but man....to not have the abysmal winters in the Midwest. What a dream.

We plan to retire somewhere between Orlando and Tampa when my husband gets out of the Army. This posting in MA did it--we need out of the winter. Between my Fibromyalgia, and the hip he broke in Iraq, we can't stand the weather up here anymore. Sad, because I have always loved winter. What is nice is that in addition to all the benefits of central FL, I have family in Orlando, Hollywood, and Key Largo. Living close enough to my cousins to actually see them occasionally will be really spiff!

Couldn't agree more!! We have a 5 year plan as well. I'll take the hot summers over our fall like summers and freezing cold winters here in the far up northeast.

I keep hearing about the outrageous home insurance rates. Can anyone living there and owning their homes please tell me how high they are, also property taxes??

We live in NC now and the climate is actually pretty awesome, but I have thought often about living in FL, but N. FL, not near Orlando or beach where the traffic is usually terrible from our experience. I'm from south LA so love the heat.

We almost moved to Jacksonville area and I did a lot of research. St. John's county just south of there is the top in the state. Also Sarasota county is ranked high as well and a district near Gainesville.

History; lived in Michigan, moved to Orlando because our company relocated there. We lived there for 18 years. At first we really loved it, but then they kept building subdivisions and not roads. Well it started getting really old driving 20 miles to work and having it take 45-60 minutes on a good day:eek: The summers in Orlando are really brutal if you do not handle heat well (me), because with Orlando there rarely are any breezes except right before an afternoon storm comes, it is just hot and humid. Did some checking before moving and the schools are very good in our area, elementary through HS. Yes; a lot of folks say go to the beach or pool to cool off, well you are no longer on vacation so you have work, after school activities, grocery shopping etc. Getting into a car that is 120 degrees is no picnic, if you have leather seats you better have a towel for your legs. We were getting ready to start a family and were not impressed with the schools there, yes there are some good ones but you better make sure you live in that area. Decided we had enough of living in the middle of the state and ended up moving to the pan handle, where there is more change of weather. We have lived here now for 12 years. It gets in the 90s here also but not even close to as many days as Orlando gets, plus there is a breeze that makes it much more tolerable. We actually get down in the 30-40s in the winter months. Plus great beaches and a very manageable 7 hour drive to WDW:banana: So if you are really thinking of moving to an area that you like to vacation, I would suggest to go there and NOT vacation and go through the daily work day routines etc. to get a better feel.

I am hoping to move down to Florida in the next few years. I will not have to worry about school districts. But I want a safe area with health food stores.
I like the heat and I hate winter.People that complain about the traffic, have you seen traffic in LA and New York. I guess it depends on where you are coming from.

Agreed!! We are beach people - love the summer and originally from Western PA - lived in South Fla for a while, outside of Lauderdale - fortunately we were close to the beach so weekends were easy but 12 miles inland the breeze was non existent - Summers were scorching hot and humid all the way through September - cooled a bit in Jan/Feb then right back to swelter - DH drove a black vehicle with leather seats - seat belt buckles would nearly leave blisters in the summer!
Though I couldn't believe for the first time in my life I looked forward to a cloudy day! We were so trained to 'get outside it's sunny' that we nearly exhausted ourselves at first -never got over the 'how can you be inside when it's sunny ' guilt!

We also moved (actually to NC) when first baby was on the way...

Never been to NY but have been to LA, Chicago, DC etc. and also lived in Detroit and here is where Orlando is very different then those cities. Using a Michigan example:) time to get off work and heard that I-94 is closed, okay it looks like I will have to take I-96 or 969 or 75 or 275 to bypass it. In Orlando if you take the only real major hwy I-4 to get home and it has an accident, you may be lucky enough to be close to the toll way (I think 417 and that is only goes on the east side of I-4) but other then that, you will be using main streets and side streets to get home. You also learn quickly that a lot of side streets in Orlando deadend at a pond/lake, learned that the hardway:laughing:

"Best" is subjective.

You can view all of the statewide FCAT results by district and school.

There are some not so great schools in some of the "best" districts. It is good to look at individual schools also, not just the district. My son attends Celebration k/8 in Osceola county. We LOVE it! It's an A school in the district. We were thinking of moving to lake county a couple years ago, they have a good district, but some of the elementary schools we looked at we're not that great.
