It really does exist!

Wow, I thought somebody maybe had waaaaaaaay too much to drink. :teeth:

My Welsh-speaking mother is from very near there. It is known locally as Llanfair p.g. The translation of the name is
'Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave.'
Unfortunately the place is not as picturesque as that description would suggest.

If I lived in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch, I'd hate to write out my return address. :rotfl:

*thank goodness for copy and paste*

I haven't but one of my teachers from school used to live there.

You know if you live there you have to have a stamp with your return address on it. I mean can you imagine sending out Christmas cards or wedding invitations and have to write out that name over and over! No thank you! :earboy2:

It must be interesting ordering stuff. Those boxes for city on the order forms is so tiny, even if you order online.

Must go through more printer ink there, lol. "Honey, I made a macro for our town name so we don't have to type it out anymore"

Suzanne

We have also visited it. I think the name is its only claim to fame. Something like the longest named city or something.

There's a place in New Zealand called...

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu

It's a Maori word that translates into English as "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater,' played his flute to his loved one."

Or how about Bangkok in Thai:

Krungthepmahanakonbowornratanakosinmahintarayudyayamahadiloponoparatanarajthaniburiromudomrajniwesmahasatarnamornpimarnavatarsatitsakattiyavisanukamphrasit

The translation here is pretty much the unabridged history of the city rather than a word.

*krungthep mahanakhon
The land of angels, the great city of
*amorn rattanakosin
immortality, various of devine gems,
*mahintara yudthaya mahadilok pohp
the great angelic land unconquerable,
*noparat rajathanee bureerom
land of nine noble gems, the royal city, the pleasant capital,
*udomrajniwes mahasatarn
place of the grand royal palace,
*amorn pimarn avaltarnsatit
forever land of angels and reincarnated spirits,
*sakatattiya visanukram prasit
predestined and created by the highest devas.

The Bangkok one is in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest (I think). But there are no pictures of either on any signs so who knows. By the way, I looked this up. There's no way I could have typed them up by memory.

I wonder what the person who came up with that town's name was doing 20 years ago? ;) :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :teeth:

My father insisted both me and my elder sis could say it properly AND spell it before we went to school!!!

No, but I've BEEN there! We went on a trip in high school - and I was the only one who could remember how to spell it. :teeth:

I think it's the longest-named train station in the world...something like that.
