jimini, many of us do not use agents after we learned to book everything on our own. I believe the main reason why some use agents in this day and age is insecurity and maybe a little ignorance about the resources available.
But regardless of the reason, I see it as your choice of either washing your car or taking it to the car wash... Changing your oil or going to Jiffy Lube. The agents still have families to feed and a job like any other that provides a choice for a clientele.
I tried them, and discarded the alternative when I realized I could do the same, my way, and without paying an extra dime or penalties for changing plans. (OK, exclude airline changes here, but still you save money)
So although my logical, most economical preference is to go it alone, it is anyone's free choice.
