Anyone know what to do about a rabbit hole?

I just discovered a fairly large hole in our lawn. It is between the front shrubs and the front of the house. My guess from the size is that is a rabbit nest. Other than the obvious of just filling it with dirt is there anything else that should be done? I am worried that dirt alone will just make them dig another hole. I honestly don't worry about them munching away at the grass, we don't have a garden, but I don't like the idea of big holes being dug against the house.

How wide is the hole? How deep? Did it have a mound of dirt around or beside it? It could be a rabbit, but I think they usually like a protected area, under a shrub or big rock. Could be raccoons or skunks digging for grubs, or a gopher or mole ( I really hope that isn't the case). Hope this is only a one time problem for you.

Gopher holes are small; 3" or 4" in diameter. Are moles bad? What trouble do moles cause?

They're a real problem in some places around here. You know the Whack a Mole game? Picture a yard with countless numbers of holes with mounds of dirt around them. They're hard to get rid of.

The hole is about 4 inches across. It is in a protected area - behind a row of shrubs and in an indentation created by a part of the house that projects further out. We just had a heavy rain before I noticed the hole so I can't tell if there was a mound of loose dirt. It definitely looks deeper than something digging for grubs. And it is larger than chipmunk or mole holes. We always have rabbits in the yard so they are my first thought but I guess it could be some other mid sized animal. i have never seen a gopher around here. Also my internet googling says to also suspect a rat but I don't want to think about that.

Maybe a gopher bomb? Might not work if there's a bunch of holes.

It sounds like a rabbit hole. We have them from time to time and just fill them in with dirt. DH caught one trying to make a nest, scared him away, he came back so he put a brick where the rabbit was digging. The rabbit didn't come back.

Same thing happened with us when we had a rabbit nesting under a barberry in our yard. After we got rid of the nest the second time I put a big rock over the spot. That seemed to work.

Had chipmunks digging nesting holes in the back yard last fall. They were persistent little buggers. Finally had to trap them and relocate them.

I would make sure there isn't a litter of bunnies inside and then fill it in if you don't want the burrow there. Mom rabbits only return at dawn and dusk to nurse the kits, so just because you don't see her around doesn't mean it's not an active nest.

This! Can't believe you're the first person to say to check there aren't babies inside! Wow just wow.

Isn't that where the dark web is:eek:

We had a rabbit nest in our yard that my dog found last summer. We put a pattern of sticks on and near the hole so that if it was disturbed, we knew mom was coming back to take care of her babies.
