Obviously my subtle hints were too subtle...knock off the sarcasm and personal attacks. This thread is very close to being closed.

She did not start anything! She shows admirable restraint ;)

Mommmmm! Glencora's snitching on ExPirateShopGirl!

I always arrive at the airport late afternoon/early evening the day before my flight London to Orlando. There are just too many things that can go wrong!

I stay overnight at the hotel inside the terminal; check my bags in as soon as check-in opens the following morning - then through security and have a late breakfast/early lunch in the airline's lounge befor flying out just before or just after lunch depending on which flight we are booked on.

Stress free travel and an extra day added to my vacation!!!

I think your online translator is working perfectly. Besides, none of us (EPSG, Glencora, I) started it!

The only time I care about other people cutting things short (except for the times I get a frantic call to try to help rebook a friend - apparently I am a "travel agent"), is when I have wait while people are pulled out of line and allowed in front of me because their flights are about to leave (check-in, security, US pre-clearance).

Why should I be punished because they decided that their time was more valuable than mine?

I'm not referring the the few times that there are major issues at an airport and everything is cockamamie.

My online translator reads that as

'Don't MAKE me turn this car around kids. I will, you know!'

Close, but more like...'you guys are driving me to drink'....trying to keep it transportation related..get it?? 'driving' me to drink????

:drive: 'Don't MAKE me turn this car around kids. I will, you know!'

That was also a transportation reference, except that I don't think that you had on your smiley face at the time...

I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know....

Wait a minute - what happened to the people who were late for the airport?!?!:confused3

Ironically, I have missed 2 planes in my life. Once I was at the airport (pre 9/11) 90 minutes before my flight. It took me over an hour to get through security (they would not let me through) and then I had to take a train and shuttle to the gate. They had closed the gate at 10 minutes prior to flight time and even though I got there with 5 minutes until take off - they would not let me on the flight AND they would not do anything for me. !
What airline and what airport?

Perhaps some others reading this can then choose their airline givne your experience.

QUICK! Someone get out the bat signal and call for the OP to update us.

Oh, wait. That won't work. The OP is the keeper of the bat signal. It's somewhere in his garage behind the worn out bowling balls. He can usually sense when we are talking about him here though; he has some kind of super power sense or something.

Guess that we just need to wait until he returns and updates us!

Now that's just crazy talk! (Kidding, says the person who recently had a very nice little weekend at MUC at the Kempinski between some long haul flights, and enjoyed the excellent shopping and dining)

But have you tried the Yotel yet? I'm trying to convince carolina_yankee to stay there next month and to write me a trip report, but I haven't had much luck yet.

Darn ... 4 pages read and I don't think Duds is gonna give us the ending :)

It was a nice soap opera on pages 2 and 3 though

On small airports, Skybus (RIP) used to fly to Chicopee, MA. You could talk to the passengers boarding on the other side of the chain link fence. When the plane departed the jet blast would almost knock you down. Now that is a small airport!!

:drive: 'Don't MAKE me turn this car around kids. I will, you know!'

When I was growing up and we took lots of road trips it was "Don't make me stop this car by the side of the road". The rest of it, "And make me smack you" went un-said.:scared:

As to the rest of it, I'm firmly in the better early than late camp. Much better relaxing at the airport than freaking out I'm gonna miss my flight.

My parents threatened to stop the car by the side of the road and leave us there. Never really took it seriously until the time my dad pulled over on a country highway and tossed my brother and I out of the car.\

And then took much longer to find a safe place to turn around than he thought he would! My brother and I were convinced that he was only going to be coming back on his way home (4 days later:scared:)

BTW - Mom, I did try to get this back towards the topic. They wouldn't let me.

I wouldn't exactly call DCA or IAH "small airports" which are my two most frequented airports, though I do have clients and regularly travel thru LAS, MCO, EWR, MSY, DAL, DFW, LAX, SFO. Only on a handful of occasions (less than 10 times in 10 years of biz travel) has it taken me more than 20 minutes using the F class security lanes at these airports.

As always YMMV. I value my time and as a paid consultant, wasting two hours cooling my heels at an airport is not a good use of time or money.

The OP mentioned that the friend was flying out of MSP. My client last year was in MSP. MSP was one of the most well designed and easiest airports to clear security. The TSA were surprisingly nice and efficient, I guess they just embody a good Midwestern hard work ethic. I would have the taxi drop my off at the far door where many didn't relalize was a security lane, if it was busy I would just pop down to the center door where there was an elite line, which usually had no more the 10 or 15 people ahead of me.

I think the key is that there is a huge difference between traveling by yourself on business and bringing the entire family. If I am flying alone I usually arrive an hour before departure. That gives me time to get through security, use the restroom, grab a bottle of water and not sprint down the jetway. You also need to know your airport. Atlanta is a zoo and it could take 15-20 minutes to get to your gate once through security, so I would add some extra time there.

When I travel with DW and DS (3) I am happy to arrive 1.5 hours ahead of time since everything takes longer with a toddler.
