Anyone know anything good for ear problems on the flight?

I am supposed to be flying on Saturday to Orlando via Miami and in the last few days I have contracted a viral infection in both my ears.
I went to the doctors last night and she said that it was probably OK to fly, but that it would be very uncomfortable and painful.
I am taking anti-biotics, but just wondered if any of you could offer any advice for the flight itself.
I am feeling very sorry for myself right now!

The only thing I know about are the 'Earplanes' that you can get from Boots. They are little valve things that fit into your ear to stop the pressure changes giving you problems.

They may help.

What a shame Carolyn - but I'll bet those antibiotics get rid of it :) Well, I'd certainly use earplanes - you can buy these in Boots ( I always use them for take off and landing now), and I'd also take a decongestant at the airport so your airways are as clear as possible. It would be a good idea to have some anti-inflammatory with you such as Ibuprofen if it suits you but do check your decongestant labels and your antibiotic info to make sure you are okay to take them at the same time. ( I think I'd have a chat with the pharmacist).

Also, as well as Earplanes suck a boiled sweet on take off and landing - remember the descent starts quite early so you'll need your Earplanes in in plenty of time.

To get the most from your antibiotics finish the course and don't drink alcohol.

....... here's wishing you a speedy recovery and hoping you'll feel a whole lot better on Saturday :)

My husband won't fly without using earplane's when taking off and landing, these have been a great find.

I've never heard of 'ear planes' I'm ok on take off but get terrible pains in my ears on landing. They can be blocked for serveral days afterwards. I'll definately get some. Hope they help.

Thanks Goofyish

Jayne, good ole chewing gum will work the best, cheap and better than anything else, failing this use a nasal spray(vicks), strange but this also works to.

Another vote for Earplanes :)

DDs and my Mum all use them and find they really do help. Youngest DD also finds they help with air sickness, so I wouldn't be without them for her!

Thank you all. I knew that you would come up trumps. Hubby is off to Boots tomorrow for Earplanes which I had never heard of, decongestant, Vicks nasal spray, and chewing gum! Am I desperate or what! :( :( Carolyn

Yep!

We bought some for our oldest DD and they are Children's earplanes - suitable for ages 1 and over.

We bought them from Tesco's, but I've seen them in Boots too.
