I'm watching it now....I've only been watching for a bit, but I don't understand it. What's the object? Why do the two guys run along in front of the "object" and rub their broom things?
As I understand it, in curling, the object is to get the puck thing closest to a target. I think the sweepers are "sweeping" the ice to reduce the friction on the ice and help the puck to move further.
Hilarious Olympic blog at www.washingtonpost.com right now, focused on the New Zealand Curling Team (aka THE KIWIS), but also on random Turin observations --- don't miss it. HILARIOUS.
Apparently, there's a link on the NBC Olympics website that explains the whole thing. All I know, is - it's a funny sport! Hey - it's Olympics & it's the only thing on, so I'll watch!
I dont know a thing about curling, but my family is glued to the set watching it now. I am only posting during the lag times. I think I want to be a curling groupie. I saw the hats and got to get me one.
I was invited to join a women's curling team when I lived in Toronto. I went to a couple of practices, but thought it looked silly. In retrospect, I wish I had loosened up a little and joined.
I haven't been able to watch any of it on tv---but I don't really get a lot of these winter sports. I wish they showed more of them on tv between the Olympic Games, so when the biggest competition came around we would have a clue.
The object is to be the closest to the center of the rings or "the button". You score one point for each rock (not puck) that you have closer to the button than the opposing team. Each player throughs 2 rocks per end, 10 ends make a game.
The sweeping does reduce friction and helps the rock both travel further and straighter. Each rock weighs in around 45 pounds and it is much more physically demanding than it looks.
While watching the opening ceremonies, three of my friends and I decided that we need to be olympic atheletes. We settled on curling for our sport, it pretty much being shuffleboard on ice. As far as countries to represent go: we felt that Cyprus might not be the best choice even though they only have one athelete, so then we decided to go with San Marino, which was the winner until we settled on Bermuda. It's warm there with lots of palm trees. This was very important to all of us, that whatever country with one athelete we represent be warm with lots of palm trees. If we ever manage to learn how to play the game whilst earning advanced degrees in various genres of literature, I'll let you know.
Tests performed on curlers show that more calories are expended during a curling game than a volleyball player will expend during a game of volleyball.
The rocks weigh about 18 kilograms apiece and some curlers can whip them down the ice at a very high rate of speed. The sweeper must run and slide along the ice alongside this stone while sweeping the path. In a 10 end game lasting about 2.5-3 hours I will have swept a distance of 1.6 kilometres.
It is a highly strategic game that is a magnificent workout. Can you tell I was curling this morning?
