I'm thinking of this as a gift for a 9 y/o boy but I know very little about the content or reading level. He loves Harry Potter, knights in shining armour, that sort of thing. Can anyone fill me in a little on Rowling's new "Beedle the Bard" book?

well, it is the collection of wizard tales that are the basis to the story of the 3 Hallows in the 7th novel. There are "notes" from Albus Dumbledore on some of the pages that give interpretation and more background.

Really, I view it as more of a collector's item than a book.

It isn't very long and it really has nothing to do with the Harry Potter saga.

The stories themselves are fairy tales, such as one would normally tell a preschool-aged child. Their only value to the older reader is as a collector's item and as a key to a plot point in The Deathly Hallows.

Thanks, everyone. Looks like that's not the best choice for him. Time to put my gift thinking cap back on. ;)

I am almost done reading it and it has some pretty graphic things in it. I suggest going to a bookstore and reading one story, "The Warlock's Hairy heart", before you decide to give it to him. It's really quite an adult book, IMO, especially Dumbledore's commentary on the stories.
