We are thinking about renting a canoe or kayak at FW this Oct. I think getting a kayak at FW would allow us more "rustic" scenery and a chance to see more critters. What do you think? there wil be 4 of us...will we fit? And I am a little concerned with coming face-to-face with an alligator:scared1:

Personally, with all the time I've spent on Bay Lake, I've never seen kayaks or canoes on Bay Lake where the FWC is located, so, you first need to verify whether or not they are actually available for rental at the FWC. Searaycers, Boton Whalers and pontoon boats are available for rental at the FWC.

You also need to realize that virtually any body of freshwater in Florida very likely has at least one alligator in it - and Bay Lake definitely has a few or more.

However, with all the activity on Bay Lake during the day, you shouldn't have any problem with alligators...unless they are really really hungry!!! :lmao:

I usually see them at night in Bay Lake after water activities have calmed down a bit.

They are available but not for the lake - they use them in the waterways,

Go to the bike barn in Meadows...

Gosh, I'm glad this subject came up. We'll be there next week and I know my kayak crazy husband would love to do this. Not sure why we haven't in all the times we've been there.

As for will you fit, Kayaks tend to come in mostly one- and two-person varieties. I would suggest renting four separate singles if you can, for the most flexibility for each member. If you have young kids as part of your four, then double up two-and-two.

That is, if that is available. I don't know firsthand, and I can't find any info on the kayaks other than rental pricing.

I used to be a pretty avid river kayaker, and tried canoeing in rough water a few times. So, I wanted to explore some of the water ways in Florida. We went up north to a national park thats about 1 hour away, maybe a bit closer, and rented a canoe. They had kayaks, but my gf was also scared of alligators and we could both go in one this way. Canoes take more effort btw, but they're pretty easy anyways. The water was so georgeous, crystal clear. We saw all types of turtles, big and small, splashing about. Tons of amazing birds (we're not from the area). The foliage was just, wow. Actual natural foliage that looked like it was straight out of a documentary, a twisting waterway, crystal clear water to the bottom, the trees reflecting in the water.

We actually did see alligator, a smaller child and parent I think (I have no idea, looked like it). They were sunning themselves on the side, we were about 30 feet away when I noticed. We stopped, and took pictures, they just laid there. The waterway isnt all that wide, so we gave them the space we could. After seeing the alligator she wasnt frightened of them anymore. They seem pretty similar to other animals that are potentially dangerous, such as bears which I've ran into more than a couple hiking. Give them there space, be aware they could be there.
