Anyone in here decorate cakes?

So, I purchase all 3 of sugarshacks dvd's. The first time I made her icing, I realized I screwed it up. So, I made it again (only using 1/2 shortening 1/2 butter) and it came out great! Her smoothing techniques are really nice!!
Here is a drop flower cake I did using her techniques:

And here are some teddy bears I did for my nieces cake this weekend:

I may be one of the odd balls, but I didn't really care for the taste of her buttercream. I ordered the wedding bouquet and I'm not thrilled with the taste of that either, I mean it's okay, but I thought it would be better from all the raves about it on Cake Central.

I like it with the 1/2 shortening 1/2 butter and I don't have wedding bouquet....I don't like having to order stuff....no hi ratio either, just regular shortening:) I used 2 T. Vanilla, 1 T. imitation almond extract and 1 T. Cream bouquet that I got off from ebay ( I love this stuff and it makes mmf taste really good too!).

I'm lovin Dino Island. I would put an exclamation point but all my number keys are broken. I can't even smile with a parenthesis. :] I'm the queen of spilling junk in my keyboard.

I'm not a fan of Sugarshack's buttercream but her method is great. You can adjust her method to what you want like disnut did. I find I get a really smooth buttercream if I use my whisk attachment and keep it on LOW the entire time. This works with just a small batch too. Keep it on low low with the whisk and let it run a good eight minutes. No air bubbles.

Here is my first cupcake cake and my first buttercream transfer. Got a call yesterday for a soccer themed cupcake cake tomorrow at nine am. I was too chicken to attempt to draw my own soccer ball so I did a buttercream transfer. Easy Peasy.

Disneynut, I know you've done quite a few of these fbct on cupcake cakes and I was curious how easily the transfer pulls apart when serving? Does it end up softening up along with the rest of the buttercream and easily come apart?

thanks you guys. it turned out better than I thought it was going to! :thumbsup2

I have to go catch up on this thread because there are some great cakes here that I've missed...

Very easy! It blends with the buttercream on your cake! Yes, it softens up nicely:) I love doing them, so are so easy!
OH and I LOVE that soccer ball! Did you find that on the internet?? If you did could you post the link where you found it? I have to do a soccer cake in August:)

I also wanted to say that I just bought this:
http://www.beaterblade.com/categories/home/welcome.htm

Its coming Fedex and I can't wait to get it! I know they have it on Amazon, but I contacted the company and they let me purchase it directly from them. Watch the video!! No scraping of the bowl needed:) As soon as I get it, I need to make some icing so I'll let you all know how it goes:)

I don't contribute to this thread as I'm only a baker, not a decorator. But I can't wait to hear how this works. I'm in love with it from reading the description. Please tell us what you think when you get it. I'm going to wait for your review before I order it.

Awesome decorating skills to all you ladies!

I wanted to let everyone know I got a call back about the Wilton position. She asked me to email her some pictures. For a silly-one-day-a-week-no-frills-job I am so nervous! Keeps sending the good thoughts! If I get this job it will be a way for me to practice my skills and a little money for our disney fund!!!

I am in the process of planning and designing my first 3-D cake.....a van for a co-worker.

Here is my question.......if I am attaching small pieces of fondant, as accents, say for the license plate on the van, what should I use as the "glue"? Would Royal icing work?

Are you putting it on buttercream? If so it should stick to the buttercream. If it has crusted I believe a little water painted on the back would do the trick. If its fondant...the same, a little water:)

I will be using chocolate buttercream underneath fondant. The base layer of the fondant will be the base color of the van. I will be doing smaller accent pieces like the head and tail lights, license plates, etc. I have attached pieces with water on other cakes and was just wondering if you all use something else.

Thanks for the help.

Linda

Yep, just water. I keep a little cup of water and a paint brush and use just a tiny amount of water.

I have also used gum glue if water isn't working. You take 1/4 t of gumpaste and let it disolve in 3-4 T of water. Put it on with a paintbrush. It is very sticky.

Hi ladies I am so excited! I got an email today from the Wilton associate. She sent me an attachment for all of the details of becoming a Wilton Method Cake decorating Instructor!

So hopefully I will find out soon when I can start.

Very cool Mrs. Kreamer:)

I have made a few... I am wanting to take a class my self but can't seem to find the time.... My biggest problem is getting the icing the right consistency. I think I have the techniques down just not the recipes.... Not really want to move to Fondant yet though.... not really sure why. I would post the link to my photo bucket but I am still new to the Dis boards to be able to.... oh well.

Just another eight posts Chelle.
