Anyone in here decorate cakes?

My son donated my services for the junior class reception for the graduation class.

Anyhow here is there graduation cake!

I've never made a cake by myself, from scratch or from a box so I've been worried about my moms birthday for a week or so. I decided that I was going to make a three teir cake opposed to a regular sheet cake. Here's how it turned out.

Very cute grad cake and Mickey cake. I think that is excellent for your first try. Very good Mickey heads. My Mickey heads always come out looking "off". Did your mom love it?

This is a cake for a wedding shower today. I hate it and I keep thinking it will grow on me but nothing yet. It just didn't work out the way I planned and I just don't know how I feel about it. I was trying to experiment with some new ideas and I just think I executed some of the ideas poorly. I don't know. :/ The branches are white chocolate and the monogram is also. I just wanted a touch of gold so I just did a few leaves in gold luster dust. It was hard to get the luster dust and extract to stick to the white chocolate due to the wax in the chocolate.

Honest opinions please. You don't have to be nice. I can take it. What would you have done differently?

The "look" is straight from the couple's wedding website so it was made to match.

Here is a sample of what is on their site. There are gold touches as well so that is where the gold comes in.

Mosmom, I really like the branches, I think the oval should have been a bit bigger, it looks clustered:) I also think its great to try new things, because once you do, you think of maybe different ideas on how to execute it differently. Other than that, I think it looks elegant!

That is why I love this thread. It is our own mini cake central without the crazies and the downtime. :p

I used paint brushes to make the mickey heads. :) My mom said her favorite gift was the cake. yay!

I really like how you put the gold in the branches. If you just stuck with the dark red branches it would have been plain. I think you did a excellent job.

lol, I know! I've been trying to get on for two days straight! It just keeps going down....frustrating!

I just ordered some pearl dust, I can't wait to use it! Plus I ordered an impression mat to tryout:)

Hi all...I've been lurking for a while now and thought it was time to join in. Since school is out I have a little more time in my schedule.

Anyway, everyone in here has some fabulous cakes. Great job! I love looking at everyone's creations.

Just a little bit about myself: I've been decorating cakes since 94. My girlfriend and I just started doing it on a whim just for fun. We've made a ton of cakes but once we started having kids it slowed A LOT! I seem to have gotten my interest back lately thanks to you all.

I thought I'd share some of my cakes that I've done.

These are some of my DD's birthday cakes

WOW! That Candyland cake is awesome!
Of course, they're all beautiful, but that one really "takes the cake!"

I agree wholeheartedly!! Aside from the clustered bit in the center, it's really a lovely cake! But I feel your pain. I hate it when a cake doesn't come out the way I had hoped that it would!

DH and I have lived in our house now for almost 5 years and we are just NOW deciding how to decorate...:rotfl: We have no storage for anything and all of my cake crap has slowly taken over the house! So DH is going to put in some cabinets in our "new" dining room (we're flip-flopping some rooms around because the way things are now just doesn't make sense or work for us). By putting the cabinets in there (it is connected to the kitchen), it will free up cabinet space in the kitchen so that I can finally organize my cake stuff!! :cool1: Maybe then I'll be able to do more caking! It's going to be a lot of hard work the next few months, but it'll be soooooooooooo worth it in the end!

Love all the cakes everyone!! LOVE the CandyLand themed cake!! Way too cute!!

Nice cakes everyone! My daughter (she's 11) wants me to teach her how to decorate this summer, so that is what we are working on....I am teaching her today how to do a gumpaste/fondant bow. She is making my mil's birthday cake and she wants to do polka dots. She made all the loops and I showed her how to do a bit of a fancy ribbon. We are waiting for the stuff to dry and then she'll put them together. Problem is that its 90 degrees and humid.

Mosmom, I have a question for you:

How did you do your cupcake bouquets and get them to stay on the cupcake. I tried and used toothpicks, should i be using something different? All the cupcakes just fell off:(

Have you tried the larger skewers? Like for kabobs?

Brandie is right. Large Shishkabob skewers work. Stick them in and cut them off where you want them. Don't put too much icing on either or you will weigh them down.

Well, I changed my mind and maybe I'll try them another time, lol. I did these and put them in small planters.

My daughter wanted that grassy stuff in there, but I don't like it.

This one is for my Father in law that likes racing:

This is for my husband that hunts turkeys. He missed quite a few so I did a FBCT of a turkey and put a bullseye on it, lol.

question - what color would you make a volcano? I've been thinking brown all this time, but I was on CC and a lot of volcanoes are black/dark gray/dark brown. I was planning to use one piece of fondant to cover the volcano and the rest of the cake (making a volcano/dino cake). Although it might transport better if I kept them separate...sorry, I'm rambling but it does all make sense in my head! :rotfl:

I think black/gray for the bottom and then brown/red as you get closer to the top so it looks like lava.
