Anyone in here decorate cakes?

yes, but I do it all by hand b/c I almost killed my KA the first time I made it...:headache:

I also always forget if it's 1 or 2 T., so I usually only put 1 T...

Kneading with cornstarch is the key to making it satiny. Do not skip this step. You must knead it for awhile. I noticed this difference with the chanel cake...the others I didn't knead it as long and without the cornstarch...

I really wanted to reply on that "save" thread but I can't reply today since the board is having issues. That woman replies to every thread to let others know they can't bump/save. Well, I assume they don't want bump/save posts because it adds unnecessary posts. Uhhh, isn't her policing and publicly wagging her finger adding unnecessary posts? They have a private message system. Perhaps a friendly private message would prevent even more posts and wouldn't embarrass the person. *rolls eyes* I don't even have 100 posts and I'm already causing grief. :p

Color it in the marshmallow stage. It doesn't mess with your consistency and it is much easier.

Thanks!
and lol about the lady on the bump.save
I know she just posts it automatically, but to me its rude, she could pm someone.

Ok, Mosmom (or anyone else for that matter:) )
I'm going to make the mmf tonight and I'm going to make a glove would I be better off making chocolate fondant or tinting it brown? Also, I'll be needing white and red fondant (very little actually), so can I half the recipe so I can do separate colors or if not, can I wrap up the fondant and will it stay fresh?

Another question...I have the baseball glove pan...I want to do that in fondant so it looks like a glove...I would LOVE ANY and all advice, lol. If it doesn't work I'll ice it, but I really would like to do it with fondant so it actually looks like a glove (oh and there are some darker brown pieces, is it possible to add color to the fondant later on???)

I'm so confused!

If you're covering a whole cake in "brown", I would make chocolate fondant and deepen the brown with coloring gel if the color is not dark enough. If you start with regular white fondant, you will need a lot of brown coloring gel to get a rich, deep color. For the accent pieces that you need a darker brown, reserve a small amount of fondant from what you cover the cake with and knead in coloring gel by hand to make it darker.

You can half the recipe and make two batches, though I usually make two full batches so I have plenty available for those inevitable mistakes.:lmao: I often color the fondant that is going to cover the cakes while I am mixing it. (I use my KA mixer and have had no problems... YMMV) and make a second batch of just white fondant. I will divide the white fondant up into however many accent colors I need and color each of those small balls of fondant by hand.

Another idea for covering your cake in "brown" would be to make Rolled Chocolate. I learned this at a cake decorating class I took recently but have not tried it yet.... so I'm not 100% sure how well it works. You melt a 12oz. bag of chocolate chips and add 1/3 cup light corn syrup, wrap in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator overnight. Roll out like you would fondant.

Hope this helps.

I saw an episode of Sugar Rush, last nite on the Food Network. Collette Peters was on. She was showing how she rolls out her fondant, smooths it out, adds dowels & then the next layer, and some fancy decorating.

It was so cool to watch her. :woohoo: Lately, she's just been judging the various Food Network competitions.Or is so busy herself, competing that she doesn't explain how she works.

Ok ladies here is my first attempt!

Its really wobbly...I don't know how I'm going to get it to where its supposed to go!

Plus I made the fondant and wow is that easy!!! I love it and it tastes good too. I'm not done with that cake yet, still need to make the baseballs:)

**I ran out of icing...I had to use Swiss Meringue Buttercream Frosting (don't like it at all!), my friend wanted butter only. and I didn't quite get the bottom of the top cupcake***

Hey! You've got a knack for fondant sister. That looks great!

Thank you! I just can't believe how easy it was to make and roll out!

Ok, these are a trial run for next weekend. I'll be making them again next weekend.

How is fondant to work with? Easy? I'd like to try it but a little chicken.

It was pretty easy for what I'm doing, but I am still taking the class with it next month:)

Thanks for the feedback. I may have to just try it.
That's what I did w/ my DS b-day racecar cake (like the one above) Just gave it a shot and it turned out pretty good.
