Anyone in here decorate cakes?

So, I did my practice cake for the 3-D carved van cake that I need to complete in a couple of weeks.

For my first attempt it came out pretty good. Stacking and carving was not that difficult as a van shape is sort of boxy and basic cake shaped to begin with. I doweled the cake to keep it from sliding and frosted it with butter cream.

I got the fondant rolled and draped it on the cake and the weight of the fondant made the cake sink about 1/4 inch. The fondant was as thin as I could get it and did crack a bit when I put it on the cake. Now, to be honest I used some Wilton that I had in the house and it was a bit on the dry side to begin with..... So, my dowels now poked through the fondant. No problem....this is the practice cake. When I dowel the real cake I will make sure that the dowels are a bit on the short side.

My next challenge came in getting the fondant smooth around sort of square corners. I got 2 of the 4 looking pretty good, but just couldn't get the last 2 corners to come out right. I ended up cutting the fondant and making a seam on the 2 back corners of the van. Once it dried a bit it was hardly noticable. Any suggestions from you more experienced decorators on how to eliminate the seams?

My next bit of practice comes in figuring out how to do the wheel holes. I think I am going to put the cake on a thick piece of foam core and cut out the wheels from there. I am going to stack smaller pieces of foam core under the cake and that way it will look like the set in fondant wheels are actually supporting the van. What do you think of this idea?

This is SO much fun figuring all of this out.

The First is a French Vanilla with Chocolate Drizzle and Chocolate Covered Strawberries...yummy!

The second is from using the Wilton Topsy Turvy pan (flat) for the same party.
They are together on the same board:)

Do you not like it beause it tastes bad or beacause it is hard to do? I am only doing this for my entry into the fair.... Do you have any pointers on how to do it?

Its messy and ack, I wouldn't eat it...Maybe Mrs. Kreamer can help you on this one since she is going to be a Wilton Instructor! :) I think it is just me, I just don't like color flow.

Make sure your outlines are nice and thick as well as sturdy. Its not as important as them to be THICK as long as they dont budge or break. These are some of the color flow things I did for my own cake at home.

If I had to do these signs over I would have done it all in blue then used royal icing to do the lettering on top instead of the whole thing color flow.

The door and brer rabbit are color flow.

The rabbit took me a whole day and I let it dry for 2 days before putting it on the cake. Just make sure you let it dry enough before using it or it will break.

Also, I've forgotten to take pictures of my recent cakes but the one I did today I have a picture of.

I saw this idea of the ramp and hot wheels to add to the monster truck theme and I just changed the landscape around it. Its for a 2 and 3 year old boy.

This is how it normally comes off. Its STUCK. Like its jammed or something. I called Kitchen Aid. They said to soak a towel in HOT water and wrap it for 10 minutes. If it doesn't work after 2x, try mineral oil. If that doesn't work I got the name of an authorized repair shop near my home. Apparently this is something not uncommon.
I love my mixer and will do whatever it takes. But LOL, I do want a Professional with a bigger bowl.....

Just an FYI....the towel wrapped in hot water worked like a charm! I'm very happy.

Back to your topic of beautiful cakes.

Sorry I have been away...
Color Flow- the only advice I have it give yourself enough time to let it dry and to be VERY careful removing the wax paper!!! Make sure you make an extra just in case anything cracks or breaks!

I haven't been on in awhile and I saw all of the post about color flow, THANKS a bunch. I have decided I love it. I have to redo what I started because I lost my mind and filled in a color in the wrong place. I will start over tonight. But so far it looks the one I messed up on Looks "PERFECT" We will see how well I did when I have to lift it. I am excited about my cakes... so far everything is going smoothly. Since it is a dummy cake and I have to ice it with Royal I have just been doing a little bit each night. I can't wait to finish them and see and results. I never would have enter the fair had I know that every technique I was going to use would be a first... but so far so good!

Wow! Looks great!

Well, I haven't done a cake in over a week! I've got a Hannah Montana one coming up and a baby shower cake. I just ordered the Precious Pets DVD from Lick the Spoon Productions, I can't wait to get that!

Here is a wedding cake for today. They gave me a picture of what they wanted but wanted it changed to match their colors. They got married in The Bahamas so they wanted it to be a beach theme.

I bought a bright teal luster dust and within minutes of using it on my shells and pearls it turned a slate cobalt blue. Ack. I've never had a luster dust change colors on me before. Regardless I think it turned out cute.

Put a hidden mickey on the top too. :p

So, here is my first attempt at a sculpted 3-D cake. It is not quite straight and level and the piping needs some work, but the person I made it for was ecstatic.

It was so much fun figuring it all out and figuring out how to give the cake enough support and still keep it hidden.

Beautiful!!!

I am making fondant animals this week, I was supposed to have done it this weekend, but I had a huge wedding party to do today (I own a hair salon, cakes are on the side;) ). So, I'm too tired to work on them now. I have tomorrow off, but plan on making these animals. This is not my work. This belongs to a caker named Summernoelle on cake central. She's fabulous! She sent me instructions on how to make those animals! I want to try to do the way she did the cake as well for a baby shower, just change the colors and patterns some.
