U-Verse's television service is IPTV, just like FiOS. (AT&T serves part of the country, Verizon serves another part, so you'll generally not have both in the same place.) We have FiOS available here, not U-Verse, but some of the things are similar, from what I've read. One of the most significant changes going from (here) Comcast to FiOS (currently) is that for anything beyond your local broadcast channels, you need an extra box (or CableCARD) from FiOS for each television beyond the first, and the tuner in you VCR or DVR will not be of use (unless it supports CableCARD). I don't know if U-Verse is the same, but that's something I would check, if it matters to you. One reason we haven't switched to FiOS is because it would cost more once we got to the third television.
Both U-Verse and FiOS are, of course, the new guys on the street, and very aggressively pricing their standard services to gain market share from the legacy supplier. Enjoy that while you can (because, of course, they're still AT&T and Verzion, and they're almost surely going to switch to charging a market price, once they're captured enough market share by underselling).
