We are seriously considering switching from Charter Cable to the new ATT U-Verse system. We could get more channels for the same amount of money and have the ability to record 4 shows instead of 2.

Can anyone out there shed some light on the good, bad and ugly about this system?

Thanks in advance!

Linda

Well if you have HDTV you can only record 2 at a time right now. I don't have HD so not an issue for me.

Also you can only pause live/rewind on the master TV. If you want to pause/rewind etc. on your satellite TV's you have to record the program and do it that way.

AT&T called and said it was available in my area, I signed up and had an installation appt, and then they called a few days before and said it wasn't available afterall :confused3 They did say not to cancel current service until U-Verse was installed. It was going to be the same price without tax as my Charter package with tax (I don't have DVR with Charter).

U-Verse's television service is IPTV, just like FiOS. (AT&T serves part of the country, Verizon serves another part, so you'll generally not have both in the same place.) We have FiOS available here, not U-Verse, but some of the things are similar, from what I've read. One of the most significant changes going from (here) Comcast to FiOS (currently) is that for anything beyond your local broadcast channels, you need an extra box (or CableCARD) from FiOS for each television beyond the first, and the tuner in you VCR or DVR will not be of use (unless it supports CableCARD). I don't know if U-Verse is the same, but that's something I would check, if it matters to you. One reason we haven't switched to FiOS is because it would cost more once we got to the third television.

Both U-Verse and FiOS are, of course, the new guys on the street, and very aggressively pricing their standard services to gain market share from the legacy supplier. Enjoy that while you can (because, of course, they're still AT&T and Verzion, and they're almost surely going to switch to charging a market price, once they're captured enough market share by underselling).

I have had U-verse for 2 maybe 3 years. When we first got it it was bad. The wind would blow the wrong way & we would lose everything for a few minutes. That lasted about 4-6 months (they kept assuring me it was just temporary). I'm glad I kept it. We haven't had any issues at all that I can recall. It is cheaper than the local cable suppliers in my area & I have more channels.

My best friend just got this installed a couple of weeks ago and she loves it. :thumbsup2

A guy showed up at our door pretending to be a Line Inspector for ATT, turned out he was selling U-Verse. I don't know how you can expect to get customers by lying to them, but that seems to be par for the course for ATT.

So he told us how all these new fiber-optic cables had been put up in our neighborhood. I'm home every day. There has been nothing like that going on. He talked about the "speed of light" signal, so I asked "you have to install wire in my house then, right?" He said no it just uses your existing cable. Huh?

I've given ATT a lot of chances but they just seem to be weasels.

I think a good assumption is that all of the suppliers are "weasels". There aren't any suppliers who are significantly different from the rest.
