I always have an accountant do my taxes since i work contract for a company and pay my own taxes. So i don't know much about what a person could get back since i always have to pay big time. But my mother helped my sister do hers online and they claims she is getting back like $8,000. Does that sound like alot to get back for a single mother of 2 working as a LPN Nurse. She was also off for about 3 months last summer due problems with her pregnancy. I do know she doesn't make very much money so it had to be less than $20,000 she made.

I used to work with a single mom with 2 kids - she got huge refunds due to the Earned Income Credit and the child credits. She always got back way more than she actually paid, it boggled my mind.

No, that sounds normal to me. If she doesn't make much she would be getting the EIC credit, credits for both her children, etc. I did a friend's taxes and they made roughly $20,000 and received slightly over $8,000 back.

It isn't so much what you make but what you have withheld. If she is only making $20,000 and has2 kids there are a lot of credits she probably qualifies for and then yes $8000 is totally in the realm of possibilities. You could pay more in your quarterly taxes through the year and get an $8000 refund too if you wanted, but that would give you less money through the year too.

As a head of household with 2 children and being considered low income it is very possible that she is getting a large refund due to Earned Income Credit.

Okay i just worried about it being wrong and my mother having to end up paying it back. Since i know my sister will have it blown away in no time.

Thanks for the replies that makes me feel better about it.

One additional comment to this. In addition to filing as HOH and getting the credits previously mentioned.

Withholding is set up to effectively treat every pay period as if the gross taxable income that period will be the same for every period of the year. If she wsas out of work, and not getting paid, for three months of the year the withholding for the other nine months was computed as if she was working all year. So she may be in a lower tax bracket than anticipated for the witholdings.
