With dh possibly on the chopping block I just did a little pre research for him. Lots of interesting things in his field. I was wondering if anyone has a success story to share. Or a horror story is ok too. He does have some professional journals but I figure it wouldnt hurt to spread his wings a little, also thinking of a cousin too since he has a very specialized field of work and had already gone out of state for a job but moved back due to the high cost of living there etc.

We advertised a position on Monster last spring. All we got in reply was spam and nuts repliying.

No, and I've been reading and applying for 4 years now. I think I've gotten maybe 3 interviews via that route the whole time.

Networking is the only way to go.

I got my current position through Monster (sorta). After I saw it on there, I went to the company website and applied through there.

I have my resume on there though and I've had two pretty good hits in the last year. I interviewed for both of them but decided I like my current job best.

My current job was listed on both monster and careerbuilder. I just had to go to the university's site to fill out the application :)

My DH got his job (Sr. Software Engineer) through Monster. He applied for quite a few jobs through Monster and had quite a few interviews. A few of the positions were with well known companies i.e, GE, Wells Fargo, Kroll. It doesn't hurt to try!!

We own a small financial services company. We have hired 2 employees through Monster. The most recent one was an awesome find. The first hire is working out adequately. It's my job to sift through the resumes. We get a lot of resumes through Monster for people who are unqualified even though we list specific qualifications. For the first position, we talked to 6 candidates, seriously interviewed 2, and selected 1. For the more recent hire, his resume was just so superior that we only interviewed him. Both times, we received more than 100 resumes.

I agree that networking is critical.

I found my job thru careerbuilder but didn't use careerbuilder to send my resume thru or post my resume. I found out where to send the resume and sent it directly to the company. However in my application letter, I did reference back to the careerbuilder ad.

I lhave been applying on Monster, Hot Jobs you name it and the only phone calls I ever received was if I wanted a sales position. I have never done sales so it wasn't on my resume anywhere so I don't know why they called me. Unfortunately I find that even through Monster its hard to find out what the company is that you are applying for because it will have an agency's name like Manpower so you have no idea who the company is. It is so frustrating looking and posting through these job boards. Cause when you find something you like or is in your field you kinda get your hopes up thinking someone will call you and............you get nothing!
Glad most of you have had better luck than me :)

Monster has come through for me with interviews a few times (and with good companies), but I love Careerbuilder, which has gotten me many, many inteviews and my current wonderful job. I've never applied to anything THROUGH Careerbuilder or Monster, though, and a couple of HR departments told me that the information they recieve from those sites is very garbled. The best way to do things is find the positions on the job sites, then go to the company websites and apply there, as someone has already posted. What site you find a position on really doesn't make any difference. Just keep hitting the one that the companies you like use. Or hit them all!

On the other hand, I can't imagine just posting a resume on any of these sites and expecting to be called. You have to put some effort into these things to make them work for you.

My DH got his job from a listing on Monster. He often got and still gets notices of jobs that are not anywhere close to what he does though, so it is pretty hit or miss.

What kind of "effort" are you referring too? You would think that job boards such as the ones we are talking about would be enough to post your resume to an open position and rightfully think that it is going to go directly to the actual company that posted the job. Isn't that what these job boards are supposed to be for? (Whether that is the case or not).!!!!!

I found DH's job on Monster or Hot Jobs, can't remember which one. But he didn't apply through there. There was a fax number listed for the actual company and that is how we got his resume to them. Lucky us, we landed in Orlando!

DH got an independent contractor position with a company through Monster. So far, so good! :)

I got two and working on a third. One was a consulting (contract position) another was permanent (although it was a filler for me). Now I'm on another monster related interview and we'll see what happens.

It works.

DH got his current job through Monster last year. He still looks at it all the time, there are tons of jobs in his field on there, hopefully in 21 months there will still be lots so we can move again.

I found my current job through Monster. Although I have to say it does all boil down to networking. I knew the guy that hired me and his dad had been a customer of mine.

I did get on a recruiter's list after putting my resume on Monster and they tend to call me every couple of months. I've had some serious offer's but I'm happy where I'm at. It is good to know you have options though.

I had approx 3 interviews thru Monster from them calling me (not to mention about 10+calls that I decided NOT to interview with)
My current job I got thru a listing on Monster, I searched them out tho.. I'm all for it!
