My wife has a recipe that calls for "simple syrup."

Anyone know what that is? She's checked two different grocery stores and had no luck.

Thanks :thumbsup2

You actually make simple syrup...its basically sugar and water:

2 1/2 cups sugar
Full 1 cup water
1/2 lemon, juiced

Combine all 3 ingredients in a nonreactive 2-quart heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. All the sugar crystals should completely dissolve. Remove from the heat and pour into a clean medium-size bowl. Let cool completely before using. If you are short on time, you can cool the syrup over an ice bath. Simple syrup can be stored in the refrigerator, indefinitely, if kept in an airtight container. (courtesy Food Network)

Depending on what I am making I sometimes omit the lemon juice.

Hope that helps!

I've made it to, and sometimes add just a little vanilla to it.

my DH the "bartender" makes his own simple syrup for Mojitos. Yummy. Just sugar and water - no lemon juice in ours.

Simple syrup is made with equal parts of sugar and water. Heated until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then it can be cooled and used in your recipe, and any extra can be stored in the fridge.

I have never heard of adding lemon or vanilla either. Just use the water and sugar like the others said.

I had never heard of Simple Syrup. You learn something new every day! :)

2 parts sugar to one part very very HOT water.
Stir, stir, stir!
Some people do add lemon juice, but (imho) it depends on what you're making.

I agree. Simple syrup is equal parts sugar and water, heated until the sugar dissolves - hence the name "simple" syrup. :goodvibes

Yup, equal parts water and sugar. Flavoring it with lemon or vanilla can be done, but it would depend on what kind of recipe you are using it for. But if a recipe is just calling for simple syrup with no further instructions, it is a 50/50 solution of sugar dissolved in water taken to a boil (you don't want the sugar to "fall out" of the solution back into crystals).

Can you believe I was just at a liquor store with a spiffy gourmet food section - they had a 14 oz. bottle of simple syrup for which they were charging $11. It had a schmancy label, but no additional flavorings. The vanilla and lemon flavored ones were $14!!
