This is the thing that freaks us out a little. All condo owners I talked to do inspection after you leave. We had thought it's work like a rental car-you sign off before you leave. Anyone had problems with damage deposits not being returned? We're not wild people or anything but we do have little kids and I don't want to be freaking out about the slighest mark they make while we're there!

Most owners request a security deposit, just in case. It should not be a worry to you unless you trash the place!

A quick 15 minute video trip around the place before you leave should help document what your leaving. We have done them before and after, especially if there was something wrong when we got there.
Got a 300 dollar bill tacked onto a hotel room one time for water damage to the room. Damage that wasn't there when we left. We disputed the claim with the credit card company and hotel; one once we sent a certified letter offering them and thier legal team a copy of the video the claim was retracted.

Works for car rentals as well.

We also travel with kids. A lot of condos/townhomes can have breakable figurines and various decorations on coffee tables, end tables.... We usually just gather up anything breakable and put it in a cabinet or closet where it will be safe. We have never had any trouble getting a security deposit back. Plus, I think those deposits tend to be for things like a hole in the wall... I don't think a broken vase would be taken out of a deposit.

The only time that we've kept damage deposits were when a family broke a coffee table and stained the carpet then tried to clean it with bleach.

Folks are reasonable. Just treat the place like you would your own house and you will be fine.
