Anyone hear about the missing man?

I think it is GREAT that DCL has no entries but I would be leery of inferring too much from the entries that are posted. Remember RCCL, Carnival, and Princess have TONS of cruises going on at any given moment where as the most DCL has at any one time is two. Its kinda like those online polls, you can’t exactly extrapolate and infer relative safety from one over the other just by what was on that cruise site. Although it is commendable that DCL doesn’t have any entries remember the comparative volume.

ITA. What you need is a comparison of number of incidents per million passengers, or something like that. In any case the record on dealing with unusual incidents should probably be a relatively minor consideration in choosing who to sail with.

Actually just eyeballing the list it looks like RCI is doing better than Carnival or Norwegian, but again that could be misleading.

Bright Futures End Abruptly On Honeymoon Cruise

POSTED: 7:57 am EDT July 14, 2005
UPDATED: 11:35 am EDT July 14, 2005

GREENWICH, Conn. -- George Smith IV embarked on his honeymoon cruise of the Mediterranean last month with plans to have children and take over his family's successful business in this wealthy New York suburb.

He and Jennifer Hagel had just been married in an idyllic ceremony at a waterfront resort in Newport, R.I., as a cool breeze blew in from Narragansett Bay and a bagpiper wailed in the distance. Nearly 150 guests attended the wedding.

"It was a glorious, gorgeous day," said the Rev. James Gibney, who officiated. "They're both sweet kids."

But on July 5, less than a week into the honeymoon, out on the sea somewhere between Greece and Turkey, Smith, 26, vanished.

The couple had been drinking heavily and gambling at the ship's casino before his disappearance, an official from the Kusadasi prosecutor's office in Turkey, told The Associated Press Tuesday.

Hagel woke up the next morning and went to the gym, not noticing anything was amiss, he said. Smith was reported missing after cleaners found blood stains in the cabin and alerted the ship's captain, he said.

The official said the woman appeared not to know what had become of her husband. She was released after being questioned by authorities and returned to Connecticut.

The official was speaking on condition of anonymity. Civil servants in Turkey are rarely allowed to speak on the record.

Neither family has talked to the media. Gibney said he spoke to Hagel's father last week after Smith disappeared.

"What he told me was that George was missing off the balcony of their room," Gibney said. "No one heard anything. No one saw anything. I broke down when I heard about it."

Smith, whose great grandfather of the same name was a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, played football at Greenwich High School. He planned to take over his parent's liquor store, the oldest one in wealthy Greenwich, and use his Internet marketing background to bolster the business, Gibney said.

Hagel, 25, came from Cromwell, where her grandfather was the town's attorney and her father was a retired police sergeant who runs a construction business.

Searches by police divers and Greek Coast Guard helicopters turned up nothing. The four-day search was suspended Saturday.

Cruise officials said earlier in the week there was an indication Smith may have fallen overboard.

Officials had not determined if that was the case, and were working with the FBI and international authorities to continue the investigation.

even if I was drinking heavily I think I would still go back to my cabin with my husband. thats really weird...

What does the cruise line itself, have to do with the situation? Horrible events can happen anywhere. RCCL is a humongous cruise line. More ships, thousands of more passengers. Those facts alone increase the likelihood of dangers onboard.

Good point. I had not thought of it that way. You are right though. But it is a little strange to read it and see all of the entries for RCCL and NCL. I have cruised on both of those and of course DCL.

Actually the Magic does have an entry on March 14, 2002. I was on that cruise and knew to look for that date.

Just sticking my nose probably in what I have no busines in but Disney did have a horrible accident occur - although it happened on their private island on May 15 of this year. I followed the links and nothing was mentioned. In talking with the crew, one host admitted that something like that had occurred in the past but that the crew membors are instructed not to talk or confirm anything. The reason this crew member talked with me was because I was there in person and saw it from the time it was reported. Upon my telling him this, he confirmed that an announcement was made over the crew quarters paging system.

So I say that just because DCL isn't on here please keep in mind that maybe the "Spin Doctors" are paid much much better at Disney than at some other lines. But think about it - it was as if nothing had ever happened. Nary a word on the ship or news. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney but it was pretty traumatic and I had nightmares for 3 days until I spoke with someone about it. All we can do is say a prayer or kind thoughts for those that need it.

Are you going to leave us in suspense??? Please share. I know that things can happen on DCL or at WDW just like anywhere else and they do have a fantastic publicity machine to keep a lot out of the media but I also know that DCL does try harder than the others to prevent what can happen. But this is life and things can happen anywhere to anyone.

But please do share what you witnessed.

maybe it wasnt reported because it happened on cc island and not the ship.
we did hear bits and pieces of this while everyone was tracking the Magic to the west coast. The cruise line disboard members asked not to post anything about the story out of respect of the family. But to keep posting about the excitement of the Magic's trip.

I understand the respect issue, but this only makes people wonder what has happened. It can lead to a panic on the issue at hand. I have no clue as to what happened, but I can say it leads me to beleive that something is being hid very well. If you had no intentions of sharing this whould have never been brought into this thread. I mean think about it...one eeyorelvr10 states it was horrible. So what does this lead us to think.

I guess I'm out of the loop. I was on CC that day, but didn't hear that anything happened.

RCI seems to have the most reports for sexual issues...Carnival for overboards!

Boy, I sure am curious about this. I think any accidents that happen should be made public and not kept hush-hush by Disney. I did a pretty thorough search and came up with nothing for the date you mentioned. If this incident was an "accident" of some sort, why haven't we heard about it?

It was mentioned quite a bit on the live thread for that cruise on the board.

I sort of got the impression from that thread that it was a heart attack or stroke of some sort, but not an accident.
That makes me more concerned and curious. Is there something going on at CC that we need to be aware of??????? God bless his family and all those involved.

I have been wondering this for weeks! I just didn't want to be the one that brought it up again, but since someone else has........No one ever did come back on and clear this up. Maybe the family will find this thread and confirm what happened. Maybe a jet ski accident or something... which would be horrible, but not something to keep hush-hush by DCL. Accidents are accidents...they do happen. Even on vacation.

OK, again I need to be filled in, I didn't follow the live post, did something happen on CC?

Edited to add...
I did a search, no need to explain. How sad, my thoughts to the family.

I did a search too and still don't know what happened. Someone asked on the "live" thread if it was a drowning and they said no. I've read through 54 pages and haven't seen any more info.

Was it the Magic or the Wonder? I am confused. I can not find the thread.

From what I can gather something that is termed a "horrible accident" happened on May 15, 2005 on CC. Well May 15th was a Sunday. The Wonder does not stop on Sunday's at their island because they go out on Sunday's. So wht was the Magic doing at CC on a Sunday? Did they double dip?
