Anyone have Vonage phone service?

We are debating trying Vonage-Bellsouth wants nearly $80.00 per month for a line and unlimited long distance. We switched to Momumtum which was $59.00, but has steadily increased rates to nearly 70 a month now. $25.00 seems very intriguing considering we have 2 sepaprate cel phone lines as a backup.

If you disconnect your land line (usually a box outside by your electric meter) you can hook your Vonage adapter to the internal phone line that runs through your house instead of to just one phone by the adapter. This way you can use the phone jacks in the other rooms. I have three phones throughout the house connected that way. Works fine.

We are also on the 500 minute plan on Vonage.
My DH loves it and we are savong about $60 a month.
With our cell phones offering unlimited long distance on nights and weekends we are covered.

This is the way mine is set up. My cable modem is in my office on the second floor. There's also a phone jack in there too. I disconnected (important!!) the phone companies connection to my house at the junction box outside. It's usually located near the electric meter on most houses. This is important so you don't have the phone companies voltages on the houses internal phone lines any more.

Instead of hooking a single phone (or a cordless phone with multiple handsets (which I don't have)) to the Vonage box, I hooked a phone cord from the Vonage box to the phone jack in the wall. Now any phone jack in the house can utilize the Vonage service.

If that methods not possible, you could just get a cordless phone system with multiple handsets. The remote handsets don't require phone jacks because they work off the base unit.

And for those that are worried about power outages, especially if you use cordless phones, I use a small UPS battery backup system to run my cable modem, Vonage box and one cordless phone system. So if the cable is still running (my local cable supply point has a huger generator on it) but the electric goes out, you still have at least one phone that works.

I've had Vonage for about 3 years now and it's worked just fine. No complaints about the service, the only reason it's down is when Roadrunner is down and then our cell phone comes in handy.

Right now, I'm looking into ViaTalk - $20.00 a month and the ability to record conversations on the fly. That's really important to DH and Vonage doesn't have that feature.

We have the basic Vonage plan and pay less than $18.00 a month after taxes. The calls don't sound the greatest but I don't really care. It costs less than half of what Verizon would. I hate to talk on the phone and probably make 10 outgoing calls a month. We used to just use our cell phones but the walls in my house are too thick to get good signal.

I really like getting emails when we get a voicemail message and being able to check messages from anywhere.

Another neat thing is that if you make most of your calls to another area code, you can get your telephone number to have that area code. Might be good for people whose older parents call them a lot or if you have a kid out of state going to school, that way no long distance charges for them when they call you!

We have been considering Vonage--We have southwestern bell now and pay just under $ 70 a month and it is virtually never used---So I have some questions if you don't mind answereing

1) I have directv satellite for tv
2) I have roadrunner for computer


Would I be able to get vonage with these in place? Or would I need to change something?

Can I have my same number?
How does the 911 work?
Are out of state people required to pay more to call me?(Asking because of the change your area code comments_i'm unsure if I understood that part correctly)

I'm not sure if anything would be different with your satellite t.v., we have cable and our internet is also cable, having Vonage didn't effect any of that at all.

I don't think that you'll be able to keep your same number. We had just our cell phones before Vonage so I didn't have to deal with disconnecting old phone service. I do know that our local exchage is 676, we have the same area code as everyone else in our area but our exchange is 666! I wasn't exactly thrilled with that, lol! Not because I think our number is cursed but everytime I give our number to someone else I usually have to think of a witty reply to "ooooh, 666".

But no, it doesn't cost anyone else anymore to call you than they normally would if they are calling you from out of your area. My comment about area codes was to say that if someone calls you long distance all the time, it will save them money if you make your telephone number have their area code. The downside of course would be that local people would basically be calling long distance to call you. I've heard that you can add a second line very cheaply with Vonage so you could do that for your second line and still have a local number for your 1st line.
